All Noelle Cunningham has ever wanted is a life beyond-beyond the walls of Eden, where only the righteous are allowed to remain, and beyond her stiflingly restrictive existence as a councilman's daughter. But only ruins lie outside the City, remnants of a society destroyed by solar storms decades earlier. The sectors surrounding Eden house the corrupt, the criminal-men like Jasper McCray, bootlegger and cage fighter. Jas clawed his way up from nothing to stand at the right hand of Sector Four's ruthless leader, and he'll defend the O'Kane gang with his life. But no fight ever prepared him for the exiled City girl who falls at his feet. Her innocence is undeniable, but so is their intense sexual attraction, and soon they're crossing every boundary Noelle barely knew she had. But if she wants to belong to Jas, first she'll have to open herself to the gang, and to a world where passion is power, and freedom is found in submission.

About the Beyond Series
This book is part of the Beyond series, stories set in a post-apocalyptic world where the rich and powerful have claimed ownership of the country's only self-sustaining city. Those who live within Eden's walls must abide by a strict moral code or risk exile to the brutal, lawless sectors.
Gangs and petty dictators rule the slums, but not all kings are created equal. Dallas O'Kane and his brotherhood of bootleggers are the only authority in Sector Four. Cross them at your peril. But pledge your loyalty, and you might be invited into their world of passion and power, sex and sin. Just remember: if you're an O'Kane, you're an O'Kane for life.

PROMISING PREMISE BUT A CRITICAL IMBALANCE
By The Literacy Advocate
I actually came to this series by reading a novella which had been sent to me; it is part of the series and I enjoyed it very much, I was keen on beginning the series from book one, BEYOND SHAME. I must say that I am happy that I read the novella first (out of order, which is something I can't remember ever doing before and would normally not do again, as a believer in reading series' in order) because my disappointment in this story is tempered by the fact that if I enjoyed a subsequent installment in the series so much, there is reason for me to try book two.
First let me say that I truly enjoyed the premise of the story and the concept of the post-apocalyptic world represented by Eden and the Sectors. I was interested in the characters, and appreciated the way in which the author described and differentiated them. I was expecting an erotic romance, and the author's ability to develop the potential for relationships and conflict among the fairly large cast of characters she introduced in BEYOND SHAME was promising. Rocha's ability to write dialogue, use descriptive language, and weave a story were all well done.
The disappointment for me lies in the fact that instead of erotic romance, I read the story as pure erotica. The narrative was quite unbalanced; most of the dialogue referred to sexuality, Noelle's awakening, and the erotic group activities and discussions of all of the main characters in small groups, large groups, and couples. The tremendous potential for world-building, character development, and action was lost as scene after scene revolved around planning, participating in, or discussing sexual activity. The Sector was a dangerous hotbed of political and military intrigue....and there was precious little realization of the potential for this to be a kick-butt story. Instead, we experienced the frustrating vacillation of Noelle and Jasper as they walked on egg shells around each other, content to discuss sex in detail but never what the reader was waiting for....their relationship to develop, until the last pages of the book. I am in agreement with a number of other reviewers who felt this book categorizes as soft porn. For this reader, erotic romance is a pleasure to read, but erotica/soft porn holds no interest for me. I will read the next in the series, because the novella I read first gives me hope that the relationships in the future books and the balance between action, relationship, and sex will be more rewarding.
I purchased the Kindle e-book and the Audible audiobook of BEYOND SHAME. The narrator did quite a good job of differentiating between the many characters, both male and female, in the story.

I almost forgot it was science-fiction
By Nenia Campbell
The title is scarily appropriate. BEYOND SHAME is one dirty book and has absolutely zero shame about it.
Society has been thrown into upheaval by solar flares that destroyed some of our most integral technology, forcing us to rebuild. As with Hunger Games, this area has carved itself up into various "sectors" with Eden doubling as the Capitol.
Noelle Cunningham has been kicked out of Eden because of her - gasp! - debauchery. She was caught drinking and having sex. How dare she. Members of the biggest, baddest gang, the O'Kanes, see her wandering around like a lost, sexy, sad-eyed lamb and take pity on her - they bring her in to their boss, Dallas.
Dallas is passingly attracted to her, but it's Jasper who wants to save her. He and Noelle eventually end up in a sexual relationship where they sometimes pair up with Dallas and Lex. In the meantime, there's tons of drama. Lex doesn't like that Dallas acts like he's already collared her, and pushes him away with passive-aggressive pettiness. Noelle feels guilty about wanting sex, but is instantly amazing at everything she tries in spite of her inexperience (curse you, Sex Fairies!).
I liked the idea of scavenging renegades fighting against an oppressive, yet oddly materialistic regime in the remains of our tattered world. I would have liked to see this explored in greater depth, because it could have made the story great instead of so-so. Sadly, its only purpose is to serve as a doomy and gloomy backdrop to lots and lots of sex, which tends to fall in the same old stereotypes despite some innovative prop use.
I was looking through the reviews for this book to see what my friends thought, because I can see BEYOND SHAME being controversial. It was. Some of my friends really enjoyed it - and I can see why. The sex, for what it's worth, is well-written and the quality of the writing itself is very good. If you're looking for something purely pornographic that won't make you feel like your IQ points are ticking away by the second, BEYOND SHAME fulfills that purpose like a dream.
However, I think I feel more similarly to Heather. I thought there was too much sex, and would have liked to have seen more focus on the story itself because after a while Noelle's needy sex-addiction and constant desire for validation really began to wore on my nerves. Like Navessa, I also wasn't really a fan of the woman-on-woman sex for the purpose of male titillation or the group sex.
Despite some very edgy content (BDSM + kink), there is a high premium placed on consent in this book, and nobody is raped or forced into sex by the good guys. That was refreshing. I also liked several of the female characters who weren't Lex or Noelle. Rachel and Six were especially awesome. I'm sure they'll be in future books in the series, and hopefully they won't be turned into needy whiners like Noelle.
2 to 2.5 out of 5 stars.

If only....
By Amazon Customer
I liked it because the plot is intriguing, but I didn't love it.
I felt like the writing was disjointed and sometimes I found myself confused at the author's descriptions (especially the steamy scenes). The potential for a really good story keeps you entertained, but it doesn't develop. I wish the author gave more details, especially when it came to Jasper and Noelle.
I couldn't fall in love with the characters because thier love seemed fake to me.
All of a sudden, Noelle just couldn't live without Jasper. There wasn't any solid reasoning to her feelings. Sex had been taboo and an abomination in Eden and therefore, when Noelle came to live with the O'Kane's she just completely whored herself out. That part, I felt, was kinda random. If Rachel and Noelle switched places the story would have been a winner.
The same applies to Jasper. I really love an alpha male complete with flaws, but Jasper's reasoning behind not being with Noelle in the beginning was just annoying and unfounded. He wanted a whore, she whored herself out, and there was never any real emotional connection between them so their union lacks substance for me. I just wanted the feelings/reasoning to be deeper. I wanted more to happen with Noelle's dad coming for her and I wanted Jasper to show Noelle a different kind of love at least once so she would have the opportunity to choose what she liked. It all seemed kinda forced on her, and no one was ever patient and slow with her.
Okay, I'm done complaining. I just wished I liked it more so that I could continue the story, but I can't. Dallas and Lex are a whole other can of annoying power struggle B.S. that I don't want to delve any deeper into. However, at least they have had time together for their relationship to become what it is. AND at least Lex isn't a leming like Noelle....OKAY, really, I'm done. This is a take it or leave it read for me. Considering how I feel after having read it, I really should have left it.
