A dense excellent reference for serious Jews

This book, by the late Rabbi Isaac Klein, of blessed memory, is the only fairly comprehensive guide to Jewish religious practice issued by the Conservative movement. As such, it is an indispensable reference to the practicing Jew. Readers will find that their is, in fact, very little difference between the modern Orthodox Halachah and that set forth by the Conservative movement's Rabbinical Assembly. The difference is, of course, in the theological approach.
Rabbi Klein's book,which has been updated and supplemented a number of times to reflect changes since its publication in 1979, is a good source for the torah, talmudic and traditional approaches to all areas of Jewish practice. The book includes one of the most comprehensive approaches to the Kosher laws I have ever seen. It also covers synagogue practice in great detail, differentiating between laws (halachah) and customs which have taken on the effect of laws. (minhag) I myself pick up the book for review whenever necessary, for example, reviewing the section on brit milah (the circumcision) after my son's birth. This is not a book for beginners who have no familiarity with Jewish practice. It is a good stepping stone for the beginner who would like to have more comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Jewish practice. I learned more in this book than in six years of Hebrew School. For the beginner or for someone looking for a much easier book of this nature I recommend Rabbi Kotlach's "Jewish Home Advisor". For someone looking for a more comprehensive work and not ready to tackle the Shulchan Aroch, this is a wonderful resource.

Perhaps the most accessible Jewish law guide ever

No matter what one's level of observance, every Jew should have a book of Jewish law and practice in their home. Having such a guide is essential for all Conservative and Orthodox Jews. Even though Reform Judaism teaches that halakha (Jewish law) is not binding, it also teaches that it is incumbent upon Reform Jews to make themselves very familiar with the laws, customs and traditions, in order to make an informed choice. Most Orthodox guides to Jewish law are written in Hebrew; the complete guides in English are usually multi-volume sets that would cost many hundreds of dollars to complete. Fortunately, most people have no need of such complete guides to law. Published by the Conservative movement, "A Guide to Jewish Religious Practice" is the answer for most American Jews. It is based firmly upon previous works, including the Mishneh Torah, Shulkhan Arukh, and later rulings by Conservative and Orthodox authorities. It is more than a list of do's and don'ts: Each chapter discusses the philosophy, history and the reasons why these laws and customs came to be. This guide covers daily prayer, tallit & tzitzit, tefillin, weddings, births, adoption, divorce, bar and bat miztvahs, death and mourning, the High Holy Days, the Jewish festivals and fast days, Shabbat, keeping kosher, the laws of family purity, the role of women in Judaism, abortion and other topics. A great job, and highly readable. [Note that some of the sections on keeping kosher have ultra-detailed sections, which many people might just want to skip.]

A very good book, but beware the index.

This is an extremely useful reference, which should be on every Jew's bookshelf. It is a remarkably comprehensive guide for its size, and is written in a clear and concise manner.
My one criticism is it has a relatively poor index. This book is not meant to be read straight through, and it can be very frustrating to spend half an hour searching the book for the answer to a specific question.
Despite this annoyance, I have found no better book on this topic.

Nothing new

Love Jo Beverly. Some of her books that I have are like my old friends. Great company for a winter night, with a cup of hot cocoa. This book was hard to get into, though. The characters weren't as memorable as some of the others and I tried mighty hard to like them. I parted company with them halfway though the book and went looking for "An Unwilling Bride" for a much more enjoyable evening.

A short tale on midsummer madness

“The Marrying Maid” is described as a ‘Georgian romance + twist on Robin Hood + fairies’! Wow, that’s a lot for a story that’s not even 40 pages long, but Jo Beverly delivers. Of course, it’s too short, but Beverly packs it in as much as possible. Martha Darby is spinster on her way to settling for Mr. Wrong, when she notices a stranger staring at her from across the park. Robert Loxsleigh visits London trying to find his “Marrying Maid” to save his family from a fairy curse.
Robert goal is to convince Martha that he’s not crazy – he only has a few days to get her to agree to marry him. In the end, she sees enough evidence (and exchanges plenty of passionate kisses) to persuade her that she’d rather spend her life with Robert than her Mr. Wrong.
A great example of a short, short story. Each character’s goal, motivation, and conflict (GMC) is revealed quickly and smoothly and the end wrapped up the HEA in a wonderful bow. I read this story to get ideas on how to structure a short novella and this is a great example!

Interesting novella, quick read

This novella was part of an anthology of science fiction/fantasy stories by various authors. I enjoyed the fantasy supernatural quality of this book, bringing in Faery, and Oberon and Titania, still playing their tricks on humankind. It would have done well as a fully fleshed out novel as well, but it worked well for the anthology stipulations.

She demonstrates that a focus on the Gaza Strip uncovers a great deal about how government actually works, not only in that small geographical space but more generally. Gaza’s experience shows how important bureaucracy is for the survival of government. Feldman analyzes civil service in Gaza under the British Mandate (1917–48) and the Egyptian Administration (1948–67). In the process, she sheds light on how governing authority is produced and reproduced; how government persists, even under conditions that seem untenable; and how government affects and is affected by the people and places it governs.

Drawing on archival research in Gaza, Cairo, Jerusalem, and London, as well as two years of ethnographic research with retired civil servants in Gaza, Feldman identifies two distinct, and in some ways contradictory, governing practices. She illuminates mechanisms of “reiterative authority” derived from the minutiae of daily bureaucratic practice, such as the repetitions of filing procedures, the accumulation of documents, and the habits of civil servants. Looking at the provision of services, she highlights the practice of “tactical government,” a deliberately restricted mode of rule that makes limited claims about governmental capacity, shifting in response to crisis and operating without long-term planning. This practice made it possible for government to proceed without claiming legitimacy: by holding the question of legitimacy in abeyance. Feldman shows that Gaza’s governments were able to manage under, though not to control, the difficult conditions in Gaza by deploying both the regularity of everyday bureaucracy and the exceptionality of tactical practice.

Fugitive

This is primarily an action driven thriller. It can be read as a standalone novel. There was enough back story supplied to gain an understanding of how Max and Carla came to be together, and of past missions for the shadowy Organisation. To my mind it wasn't as dark or as gritty as I would have thought with this type of thriller. I have to say that some of the events in this novel did defy belief.

To my mind the most interesting character was Star and I would have liked to have known more about her. Star had the potential to be a standout and I would have enjoyed seeing her take a more dominant, central roll.

This novel could have really benefited from the services of an editor or several ruthless beta readers. The misuse of commas was distracting to say the least. The liberal insertion of commas halted the flow, rhythm of the story and I often had to go back and re read sentences. After a while it became irksome. There were a few typos i.e flue instead of flu but they were minor.
A lot of the dialogue didn't ring true and came across as wooden for the characters. It didn't tie in with how Max, Carla and Star were portrayed.

I enjoyed the ending, can't say more without giving away spoilers. Whilst this novel certainly isn't character driven there were plenty of action scenes supplied for this type of novel.

I was very confused by the genre of this book. It’s clear that Day has talents in many areas but I felt he attempted to combine too many things into this volume. This selection did not read like a mystery/thriller it felt more like a sci-fi/action read. My expectation was that it would have been darker and focused more on the characters which ideally would have remained involved with murderous scandal. However the interaction of fast machines, unrealistic creatures, chase scenes, random sex, all twisted together with government secrets left me feeling like I was watching a bad action movie.
I look for books that read quickly and give me a story that keeps me guessing along the way. In my opinion this book fell short of those expectations. The numerous actions and different scenarios kept the reader guesstimating what setting would come next, however, there was not much left to the imagination about how things would turn out because the chapter titles revealed the climax of the section. I think for me that was the worst part of the novel, I kept thinking why am I bothering to read this when I can assume I know what happens!! I like a novel to flow and to make me guess about what's ahead, not to tell me the surprise and then play out the details for the next 5-10 pages.
My next concern was the use of excessive description which seemed over the top for me. It doesn't take much for me to know what's going on in a story and I don't necessarily need to know every last detail when it comes to the scene. I felt especially in the beginning portion of the story that the descriptions of the scene felt more like Day was trying to describe a movie scene to a blind man. Also the dialogue throughout did not feel natural and I found myself re-reading sections to understand completely what was being said.
On a positive note being the third in a series this book this was able to be read as a standalone piece. I have not read the first books and was able to understand where characters were coming from and how they fit in the current setting. I also liked the fact that all of the characters were faced with a common problem and that all of them were able to interact at the end. That being said I don't think enough time was left to wrap up the book and as a result the end sort of felt rushed. I was disappointed that I waded through all of the monotonous details in the beginning to have everything end in a quick minute.
Overall, the book was decent if you’re looking for something to occupy your brain and not make you think too much. It’s not a must read and really not something I would be recommending to my friends.

Gripping read!

“Fugitive” is definitely a must-read for every spy thriller fan. It has everything: a quickly paced narration that keeps you on edge, interesting characters, exotic locations, government conspiracies and even a deadly virus threatening to wipe out the Earth population.
Max and Carla, two agents working for the Organization, get separated when Carla is kidnapped by her father Philippe; Max loses his memory in the accident while pursuing their car, and the two will have to go through hell to find each other once again. Russian mobsters, mentally unstable Max’s new girlfriend Star and the dangerous task concerning the pharmaceutical company in New York would make their reconciliation seem impossible, but there’s nothing Carla won’t do to save her beloved one.
Impossible to put down, “Fugitive” made me want to read the other books in the series. Great, gripping read!

Best Step-by-Step Guide for Statistical Analysis

I first used SPSS on a mainframe computer at a university. Researchers needed programmers who used 3-ring binders to write the statistical procedure code on punch cards. Fast forward and today we have "SPSS for Psychologists." I have found this the most user friendly source on the market - and I have a shelf full of references and printouts from the web. If you want to learn how to run and interpret a statistical procedure, this will be your best step-by-step guide. Highly recommended.

Great tutorial

I use this as a hands-on reference book, and I find that it is often very helpful. Clear directions and examples, and you can download data from their site. Excellent guide for SPSS.

I just wish they had more instructions on creating and modifying figures in SPSS.

Massive Help for my Report!

Very clearly and concisely explained; I purchased this book to assist me with a Project write up for my degree as I was failing to grasp some of the concepts of the F ratio and what it actually meant, and despite substantial research couldn't get a straight answer. This book gave it to me straight away, which helped clear my mind to see where I was going wrong with my results section. I will also be using this later on this year with my new module which deals with more complex statistics and reporting as it covers everything in such an easy to understand manner. Thoroughly recommend.
