Uncovering the intellectual and cultural richness of the early years of academic art history in Germany―the period from the 1880s to 1940―she explores various attempts within art history to transform aesthetic phenomena―chaos―into the cosmos of a systematic, unified field of inquiry.Lang starts by examining Panofsky's approach to aesthetic phenomena in his early theoretical essays alongside Ernst Cassirer's contemporaneous publications on the substance and function of scientific concepts (and on Einstein's theory of relativity). She then turns to the subject of aesthetic judgment through a rereading of Kantian subjectivity and Kant's uneasy legacy in art history. From here, Lang considers the different organizing theories of symbolic form proposed by Aby Warburg and Cassirer, as well as Goethe's inspiration for both; Alois Riegl's notion of age value and Walter Benjamin's conceptions of the aura; concluding with an extended examination of objectivity and the figure of the art connoisseur.Extensively illustrated with works of art from the Enlightenment to the present day, this venturesome book illuminates an intellectual legacy that has profoundly shaped the study of the history of art in ways that have, until now, been largely unacknowledged. Not for boys you want to raise properly. Should have returned it. Too much stuff in it that I totally disapprove of, and would never want my grandson to be subjected to at 9 years of age. Even at 12 or 13....It is really an unkind book. Even my son disapproved, and that is saying something.

I bought it thinking that it was going to be like "The Big Book of Girls", which has plenty of advice, interesting topics and empowers girls. This book is nothing like that. I guess you can find "advice" (like how to insult someone else), there are plenty bad jokes, unimportant topics, poor language, and does not help boys the way the other book does. A good thing is that there are experiments, outdoor activities, and a list of books. My son liked it, but I was hoping for better content.

Filled with airships, steam powered and crystal technology Butcher paints a vivid world and introduces us to characters from all occupations within Cinder Spires. We enter the story as the war begins and Butcher allowed me to easily immerse myself in their story.

Butcher shares the story using third person limited perspectives of multiple characters. While Captain Grimm mentioned in the synopsis above is a focus, he is not the only key character. We also spend significant time with Cadets- Bridget Tagwynn, a butcher’s daughter and Gwen Lancaster, a daughter of privilege who is hilarious without trying to be. Then there is Lieutenant Benedict Sorellin-Lancaster, Gwen’s cousin. Two of my favorite perspectives came from Folly the Etherialist apprentice and from those of Rowl a member of the house of Nine Claws. Rowl is a smug, hilarious, brilliant cat. Yep, you heard me, a cat. He is quite the little hero and travels with Bridget as her protector. He is also heir to his clan. They all find themselves working together as a team and I enjoyed all the different dynamics they brought to the table.

The world Butcher has built is complex, beautiful and home to many unknowns. Cinder Spires is located in the mist above a planet that is uninhabitable by humans and overrun with monsters. *shivers* I will not spoil it for you, but these monsters are sure to make you freak out. Butcher does not subject the reader to large information dumps, instead we learn through the characters. When we find out about the surface of the planet and the monsters, we are out with Bridget, Folly and Rowl. Butcher effortlessly weaved it into the conversation leaving my jaw hanging. While I am unsure of where we are, the world is vaguely familiar to Victorian London particularly with the social classes.

The Aeronaut’s Windlass with its steampunk goodness and colorful character was an excellent beginning to this new series. Things are not completely revealed to us, but Butcher drop hints about characters, the past, of darkness to come and the economy. While I still have many questions in particular what prompted the war itself I was satisfied with the world and the knowledge we are given even as I crave more. Great book on body language

This book does an excellent job of telling you both how to improve your body language to achieve certain goals such as influencing people, but it also tells you valuable tips about how to decipher others' body language in order to debunk their communication beyond their words. I think this is really great and necessary in a variety of situations, and the tutorials in here can come in handy for anyone who would really like to improve their non-verbal communication skills.

This was a great book for learning to master body language. I always felt like I didn't have a good grasp on this topic before but after reading this book I feel much better informed about the whole thing. I can honestly say I understand what is going on more in conversations thanks to this author.

I would recommend this book, it is very good!

This is a fascinating book! What I liked most were the many illustrations demonstrating the authors' points throughout the book. Read the text though--there is so much more to this book. The author's sense of humor, though a little dry, added entertainment to an already enlightening read. I especially liked the courtship section. It is amazing that women send signals an average of 5 times before the men they are interested in respond. It just shows you how dense we men are. I found it unsettling that if you are interested in another woman at a party, the woman you are with will pick up your signal is a New York minute. And, if another woman starts flirting with you from across a room, the woman you are with will send recognizable body language to the other female: "hands off, he's mine--you're looking at trouble."

After reading this book, I guess I will never go into another meeting without subconsciously, or consciously, trying to recall the lessons in this book. I hope someone in the Harvard business school considers teaching this text in a course.
