This was my first exposure to Neil LaBute. I bought three plays, and I can't wait to read the others. The Shape of Things is very thought-provoking, and I see in his characters many truths about humanity.
Buy the book. You won't be sorry.

Do not pass this play up!

At first glance the play seems like it may be quite ordinary. it features the relationship dramas of four young college students in a tangled web of couples swapping and reconciling. As a playwright many of Labute's styles can be attributed to other influences. The punctuated rhythms of his dialogue and ear for exact phrases and slang resemble Mamet, and he is a well trained playwright- well versed in contemporary theater (particularly his most recent play in England and its Bond influences).
Labute's talent however seems to lie in his ideas on cruelty and bizarre relationship dynamics and sadistic, dark plot twists which are a feature of his first two films, certainly this play, and his latest work "Distance from Here." In this particular work Labute infuses ideas about the nature and role of art in the world into his relationships. While three of the main characters are somewhat typical midwestern middle class liberal arts students, their world is shaken by an art student that enters into their lives and begins to use them as her palette. She transforms life itself into a work of art through her manipulations. The twisted dynamics, anguish and frustration in the play is painful to experience and particularly visceral.
Meanwhile, the form ties into the themes. As a piece of live theater the audience nearly becomes complicit in the crime by patronizing a work of art that features lives torn apart and altered on stage. The climax in a lecture theater with its twist was probably staged in such a way that the audience became participants and active in the main character's anguish and undoing.
While this piece does have its flaws, it is a gripping and incredible play that functions not only well as a drama, but as a sophisticated discussion of the theater. This play is conscious about why theater is a fascinating art form and uses that to its advantage.

"Fear No Art?"

Several years ago, PBS distributed to subscribers a particularly annoying, idiotic button announcing that with-it people "Fear No Art." Even though such heralded types as Plato and Tolstoy had worried about the artist's frightening power to create as well as to wreak havoc on the social order, PBS thought it knew better. Artists these days are basically nice people, it held, and thus they will necessarily use their powers of self-expression only to enrich the lives of everyone in society. Consequently, we must be open to and accepting of whatever an artist comes up with - even a crucifix in a bottle of urine - lest we be thought narrow-minded or indeed intolerant. Neil Labute looking at the current scene with wide open eyes challenges the complacency in this conventional thinking about the "nice" artist and life. In "The Shape Of Things," he vividly brings home to us the truth in Jonathan Swift's observation that "nice people are full of nasty ideas." Set among campus Me-First postmoderns who delve into art and engage in tangled "relationships," Labute's play gives its characters free rein to reveal themselves as both pathetically and hilariously stunted human specimens. Their seeming one-dimensionality is by satiric design, as are those hints of rage and clueless meanness which occasionally ooze out from beneath their laid-back surfaces to enrich the key moments of dramatic encounter. Like many of the sardonic Ibsen's characters, Labute's too have snarling trolls lurking just beneath their "nice," ever so tolerant, "non-judgmental" public selves. Most significantly, his charismatic, rebellious central female figure, her inner person reduced wholly and subhumanly to warped aesthetic concerns, emerges as a satiric embodiment of the postmodern artist as essentially destructive creator.
To any mainstream critic who goes to plays and demands "positive" or "compassionate" endorsements of the received ideas we hold or our self-absorbed lives as we generally live them now, Labute has little to offer. Refreshingly free of such frothy, mindless cheer, the playwright instead skewers unquestioned contemporary notions of art's necessary beneficence and those of the glories of untrammeled individualism. Human nature and art, he reveals as satiric dramatist, are both larger and more problematic than such currently genteel, fashionable conceptions of them. Far from being "non-original" in his ideas, Labute more than any other current playwright provokingly calls into question the actual - not the putative - received ideas about art and life which are thought "cutting edge" in our time. If anyone writing drama today could produce a fully realized masterwork on the way we live now, I suspect it would be Neil Labute.

Something rare: a new idea

When I was thinking about writing the history of a professional society, I was urged to do some reading on professions. It was discouraging. The authorities had been going in circles for years, until Abbott came along and clarified the topic. His book was well-received; as I recall he was a visiting professor in New Jersey before it was published, and a full professor at Chicago soon afterwards.
Actually, there are several new ideas. One them is that professions restrict their markets when they attempt to raise their fees by adding barriers to entry. Since demand is stable or rising, this creates opportunity for other groups to move in "below." As physicians' time becomes ever more valuable, RNs achieve the status of practitioners and LPNs fill in. Aides are now certified, and so on. This seminal idea was published in 1988. Almost ten years later, Clayton Christensen described in his well-regarded Innovators' Dilemma how a corporate fixation on upselling existing customers assured that less lucrative markets would be neglected, providing rich opportunities for new entrants. The parallel is striking.
Whether you have any interest in his topic, Abbott's exposition is worth studying as a model of effective rhetoric. And the writing is vivid; he worked for years in a large mental hospital, "After five years, . . . I had helped administer several tons of thorazine, mellaril and their cousins . . ."

Almost 30 years after first publication, still relevant

Almost 30 years after first publication, this essay remains relevant as to how professions develop over time and in different countries. It is written in a highly academic manner, so it is a bit challenging to stay engaged in reading the book, but it's a fascinating look at the history of the accounting, legal, and medical professions in particular. Abbott compares how those professions developed differently in the US, UK, and France and offers potential explanations for these differences.

Very insightful read - up close and personal

This is one of the best books I've read about what makes a successful entrepreneur. It reads very easily and is packed with information that is easy to understand - even to someone who is not an entrepreneur like myself. Each chapter in the book is about a different entrepreneur and covers companies like Aveda, Best Buy, Great Clips, Medtronic, among several others. In the introduction the author mentions that the book is a result of interviews with each of the entrepreneurs - which is probably why each chapter reads like a story in itself. Each chapter has details starting from the the childhood experiences of the entrepreneur, to the successes and lessons learned on their journey to success - and includes circumstances and considerations that resulted in decisions made by them. I liked how the author highlights "lessons learned" after each section. I also liked that I got a good insight into not just the financial and environmental circumstances and decisions that led to their successes, but that I also got a good sense of the personalities of the entrepreneurs interviewed. Besides the insight into entrepreneur's personal considerations, I also found the details on how they handled funding and cash flow related situations very insightful. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who either wants to become an entrepreneur, or is an entrepreneur and would like to gain insight into how to deal with some complex situations, or is just plain curious about what makes these billionaires tick.

This is a one of those "you gotta read it" books

I am an entrepreneur and have my MBA from The Wharton School. What I learned from Dr. Rao and his book was like receiving a mini-MBA in how to launch and grow a business.

First, I heard Dr. Rao make a speech presenting many insights he found in his adventure of interviewing this group of successful entrepreneurs. Dr. Rao's presentation used humor and his perspective from his own successful career to demonstrate how entrepreneurs often start down a chosen path but have life and competitors steer them in other directions which leads to the entrepreneur's success and wealth. I took notes furiously during the presentation, barely able to keep up with the ideas that come flying at you from Dr. Rao. The presentation was as valuable as the book.

And then, of course, I had to buy the book. I have dog-eared so many pages which had great ideas I wanted to study and remember that the book doesn't lay flat anymore. What makes the book so compelling is that Dr. Rao's interview style with his subjects was very successful since it was able to draw so many ideas out of the minds that created them. Equally as interesting and helpful is that the content of the entire book is laid out in numbered paragraphs according to each entrepreneur interviewed with many of those paragraphs containing their own $1,000,000, $10,000,000, $100,000,000 and $1,000,000,000 ideas.

This is one of those "you gotta read it" books.

This book is a great read for the lay person who wonders what makes some entrepreneurs so successful. I am not a business person, but found the lessons applicable for finding success in any pursuit. It is also fascinating to read about people who have had influence in our lives because of their innovations and insights.

I have to say it is thanks to this book and Sylvestry that I passed my boards on the first try. The types of questions that they have along with the rationales are so helpful. I did not take a review class when I decided to take my LVN boards, I used this book instead. I would only recommend do it this way if you are taking your boards right away or up to 4 months out of school.

Excellent book

I started to study this book after I graduated my LVN program. I studied the parts of the each section by covering the answer, and trying to answer the question without looking at it. I read all the "rational" for each question. After a month I finally I went to take the test. I thought I was not ready to take the test yet because I did not study all of the questions, but I took it anyway. Thank GOD I passed the test after just 85 questions. I really love this book and I know that it will help anyone to pass the NCLEX.
