Abracadabra! This book will cast a spell on you!

Reading has never been an issue for me. Even as a kid, I was often found curled up in a chair with a stack of books, and I never had trouble finding one that captured my attention. As a bookworm parent, I was shocked when my first child turned out to initially be a very reluctant reader. Books that I thought sounded amazing held no appeal for her, so I learned to search for a wide variety of subjects and character types in my search to find something she'd enjoy. Nowadays, I often find her with a book in hand, but it took some time and some coaxing to get her there.

I mention all this because The Vanishing Coin is exactly the kind of book I looked for when trying to find some outside-of-the-box books that might appeal to her. It stands out from many other middle grade books because it takes a different approach, offering up a combination of a fun story with interesting, winning characters, and some nifty magic tricks. It's the kind of book that will likely click with any kid interested in magic, and might appeal to more reluctant readers because it covers a subject not often seen in middle grade novels, not fantasy-style magic--though there's an element of that as well, but the type of magic performed that's performed by illusionists.

The book's main character, Mike, is basically a good, fourth-grade kid who keeps landing himself in trouble because he has problems staying focused. I don't remember if the book ever mentions a specific diagnosis for him, but it does cover how his parents have worked with him to help him develop coping skills. It's not that Mike is necessarily uninterested in school, he just finds it hard to do things like remain in his seat during tests. He likes to get up, walk around, play with objects to help him clear his head. This book made me think a lot about kids in this situation and how our educational system doesn't do much to help them out. Throughout the book, it seems like Mike would be more successful if he weren't expected to sit at his desk with his hands folded. I imagine a lot of kids will identify with a character like Mike, a square peg who's frustrated by the way everyone tries to stuff him in a round hole, even when he knows their intentions are good.

By contrast, Mike has a friend named Nora who seems to be the exact opposite of him: bookish, smart, and the type of student a teacher loves to have. Nora is also kind and considerate, though, and she doesn't make Mike feel like he's lesser. The nice part about their relationship is these two help one another see that not everyone has the same sort of personality, and both experience growth because of it. Mike comes to understand that while the grass may seem greener on Nora's side, she has her own unique set of challenges and obstacles. At first Mike is embarrassed by their friendship, which springs out of necessity because their parents help one another out with childcare, but over time he grows to appreciate Nora and to see that because they are different, they're able to look at things differently and reach outcomes neither of them would have been able to reach on their own.

The book contains some bullying as well, by a kid named Jackson who sees Mike as an easy target. What I like about this book is that Mike starts to learn new ways of overcoming the bully, but he also feels glimmers of sympathy for the kid. Rather than taking the easy way out, the author gives Jackson some shades as well, giving readers a glimpse of why Jackson might act the way he does. Mike isn't always nice to Jackson in return, but I think the book does a good job of depicting how Mike and Nora try to work out solutions to dealing with the Jackson problem. As this is the start of a series, I anticipate that this storyline will evolve over time, and I think there's a lot yet to be explored here.

The most satisfying aspect of the book, though, is that Mike discovers his passion and realizes that he isn't stupid or incapable, he simply needs to feel passionate about something in order to be able to fully focus on it. This doesn't undo the problems he has with school and, indeed, his newfound passion sometimes interferes and creates more problems for him, but I liked this aspect of the book as well. It's important that kids learn to find a balance between doing the things they love and getting done the things they have to get done. Mike's problems aren't all resolved by the time this book ends, but he starts to see how blending his passion with his chores can help him to become better at both, which I think is a great message. There's plenty of room for growth over the course of the series, with this aspect as well as with the character aspects.

Mixed in with the narrative are pictures of various scenes, though this isn't truly a graphic novel. It's a good transitional novel, though, bridging the gap between picture books and chapter books, and it might also draw in kids who prefer comics and graphic novels to novels. The real fun, though, is in the magic tricks that are sprinkled throughout the novel. They sparked my own fourth-grader's interest so much that she wanted to try all of them, so I told her to make me a supply list so I can get her what she needs to perform the tricks. She very much liked the idea of being able to amaze her friends with some illusions, and it's always a plus for me when a book inspires her to explore topics related to it outside of the book itself. She enjoyed this book so much that she told me right away she would want to read the second, and there are few better recommendations for any book than that.

An easy, fun read and a charming start to a new series.

The Vanishing Coins is a charming start to what promises to be a great new series for young elementary school readers. Readers will find it easy to relate to young Mike, an intelligent, good natured young man who has a bit of a problem sitting still in school. He's tired of being the one always in trouble, and is searching for something he can be good at. It looks like he finds the answer when he and a friend happen upon the White Rabbit Magic Shop. They encounter a mysterious magician, and Mike learns that he might just have a special talent he can use to make his school life easier.

This is a very simple, straightforward story that also includes some well written instructions for magic tricks that will likely turn many readers into aspiring magicians. The Vanishing Coin is a great start to a new series and an enthusiastic recommend for students in grades 3 and 4 looking for an easy, fun read.

For my grandson Noah, 9, fourth grade is expected to be a fresh start, and I thought sharing with him some entertaining ideas will help him stay attentive in class, and interested in his Charter school. This book features an active fourth grader called Mike, who seems to suffer from Einstein's wondering mind. Mike's parents have ordered him quit soccer so he can focus more on school work, but staying on task is an endless struggle for poor Mike.

Mike who can't stay still, is already back from the principal's office. Deprived of playing soccer, he is to hang out with his new neighbor Norah. She is a Rachel of all trades; annoyingly good at everything. They discover the White Rabbit magic store, and resourceful owner. Mike feels a spontaneous connection, and discovers he has a great potential for magic tricks, helping him to fit into fourth grade and may even deal in confidence with class bully!

The Vanishing Coin is the first volume of a new series for chapter book novice readers. Co-writer, Mike Lane, a magician, gives directions to performing magic tricks, so Noah can learn tricks right along with Mike. This book is very appealing for young readers 8-10, a clever introduction to 'do-magic' book. Richly illustrated with attracting cartoon drawings by author and illustrator Eric Wight. This book appeals to all kids, particularly recognition seekers.

Another good one - definitely enthralling

Book 2 picks up with Leslie bound to Tristan for her second trial. A part of me wondered if she would be able to do this again. She didn't expect to feel anything for Ben, yet she did. What would happen if she also feels something for Tristan at the end? How would she be able to choose between them, and for which role? We obviously don't get any answers in this one, but Leslie does learn more than she did in the first book, and she actually went into this one with a little more restraint. She didn't automatically assume the worst or jump to conclusions, but she also had to invest more beyond the sex.

The Fae were quite different from the werewolves. Where the wolves were aggressive and tough, the Fae were more polite and refined. And yet the one thing that remained constant is both put the clan as a whole above any one person. Clan came first and their respective leaders would do anything to protect the clan. Similar to book one, Leslie is challenged with learning as much as she can about the Fae, without becoming invested in them as she is only Fae for one week. What she learns in this one is devastating. Her role is so much more complex than she originally thought, and the more she learns, the more she begins to understand why the clans hate Kingmakers.

I didn't know where this one would go, and was surprised and not by what she learns about Tristan, his people's "curse", the rumors that he is a drug lord, and that she may have to make an even more horrible decision than banishing one of the candidates. I really liked Tristan. I actually like him better for her than Ben, by a hair. Both are so very different, yet similar in their beliefs and leadership skills. It makes me begin to wonder if Leslie will make it out of this intact. I've never known Lizzy Ford to have an unhappy ending, but there is a first for everything. And frankly, if the vampires leader is as delicious as the last two, I'm just not sure how she can survive this. This is definitely a good series for anyone who likes paranormal books, and is over 18. I highly recommend it and am looking forward to the next book.

One of My Favorite Series EVER!

I am IN LOVE with this series. I have almost every supernatural series there is out there and I am constantly on the hunt for a new series. This one did not let me down. I love a good hot steamy romance and there is plenty of that! ;-) This series keeps you on your toes and has twists and turns and I had no idea how it was going to end. I was shocked but oooh so happy with the outcome! I highly recommend this series! I bought the series about a week before leaving for a trip ( to start on the plane ) and read the whole thing in 4 days! So now I have to find another one to get before I leave haha

Great continuation of the Trial series!

Holy crap! This second trial has thrown me through a loop. Tristan has so many layers and I rather enjoyed all of them. This of course has me wondering what Leslie's decisions will be and when she is given more info from the book of secrets, info that is unbelieveAble by the way it has me wondering where the course of these trials will lead us. I was left hanging with a big cliffie at the end of this one - I expected a cliff hangar but did not expect the one I was left with! Can't go into more right now as I have to move on to the next trial but OMG, if you are looking for an adventure this series is for you!

GERALD B. SHEBL� joined Auburn University in 1990 to conduct research in power system, space power, and electric auction market research. He joined Iowa State University to conduct research in the interaction of markets and power system operation. His academic research has continued to center on the action of the markets based on the physical operation of the power system. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Excellent reference useful worldwide

Wood and Wollenberg provide a most useful guidance for graduate courses in power engineering in Chile. I have been using it regularly as the text book for a course on Economic Operation of Power Systems. The basic concepts are well explained, the mathematics are clear and the power generation matters are well supplemented with the optimization basic concepts. Thus, the book stands on its own as a most useful educational tool. Although deregulation has somehow changed the way power systems operation and control are handled, the book stands strong in providing a coherent understanding of concepts and methods involved. My graduates, working in industry, have found the course (and of course the book) most useful for their careers.

This is a great book

This is the first authoritative and comprehensive text on power system operations and control. The book provides an excellent overview of the basic topics that need to be covered in such a course at either the advanced undergraduate or the introductory graduate level. The improved second edition of the book has been widely used in various power programs throughout the world. I learned everything about "power system operation and control" by studying the first edition of this book in the mid 1980. I have used it as a professor and recommended it to all my students. This book still has no rivals in the market and is the single best source for a text in the subject area.

We use the book at ASU

We have used this book at ASU for quite a while. The book is well done and clear in its writing style. All the traditional dispatch methods are covered in detail. The section on dynamic programming is excellent. There are a number of very usefuyl tricks and tidbits in the book, and this give students a feel for the subject. If there is any weakness, it is too short -- I would like to see this expanded to two volumes. The section on state estimation is a good introduction.

Diamond evenhandedly reviews human history on every continent since the Ice Age at a rate that emphasizes only the broadest movements of peoples and ideas. Yet his survey is binocular: one eye has the rather distant vision of the evolutionary biologist, while the other eye--and his heart--belongs to the people of New Guinea, where he has done field work for more than 30 years.

MacArthur fellow and UCLA evolutionary biologist Diamond (The Third Chimpanzee, 1992, etc.) takes as his theme no less than the rise of human civilizations. On the whole this is an impressive achievement, with nods to the historians, anthropologists, and others who have laid the groundwork. Diamond tells us that the impetus for the book came from a native New Guinea friend, Yali, who asked him, ``Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?'' The long and short of it, says Diamond, is biogeography. It just so happened that 13,000 years ago, with the ending of the last Ice Age, there was an area of the world better endowed with the flora and fauna that would lead to the take-off toward civilization: that valley of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers we now call the Fertile Crescent. There were found the wild stocks that became domesticated crops of wheat and barley. Flax was available for the development of cloth. There was an abundance of large mammals that could be domesticated: sheep, goats, cattle. Once agriculture is born and animals domesticated, a kind of positive feedback drives the growth toward civilization. People settle down; food surpluses can be stored so population grows. And with it comes a division of labor, the rise of an elite class, the codification of rules, and language. It happened, too, in China, and later in Mesoamerica. But the New World was not nearly as abundant in the good stuff. And like Africa, it is oriented North and South, resulting in different climates, which make the diffusion of agriculture and animals problematic. While you have heard many of these arguments before, Diamond has brought them together convincingly. The prose is not brilliant and there are apologies and redundancies that we could do without. But a fair answer to Yali's question this surely is, and gratifyingly, it makes clear that race has nothing to do with who does or does not develop cargo. The only persuasive explanation for the wealth gap between the West and the rest

Two decades ago a UCLA geography professor named Jared Diamond published Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies. Diamond hypothesized that the arc of human history was dramatically shifted by geographic, environmental, biological, and other factors, resulting in the worldwide dominance of the leading industrial powers during the past 500 years. The book won a 1997 Pulitzer Prize and quickly became a New York Times bestseller.

Why is economic development so uneven around the world?

Diamond posed questions fundamental to the experience of the human race. “Why did wealth and power [among nations] become distributed as they now are, rather than in some other way?” “[W]hy did human development proceed at such different rates on different continents?” “[W]hy were Europeans, rather than Africans or Native Americans, the ones to end up with guns, the nastiest germs, and steel?” In his award-winning book, Diamond posited a “unified synthesis”—a unified field theory of history. Drawing from his wide-ranging knowledge of medicine, evolutionary biology, physiology, linguistics, and anthropology as well as geography, he surveyed the history of the past 13,000 years and identified plausible answers to the questions he had posed. In the process, he wrote what I consider to be the single most illuminating book on the history of the human race.

Academic critics howled

However, academic critics howled shortly after the publication of Guns, Germs, and Steel:

They referred to supposed errors in geography and history, which I find largely pointless. For example, geographers complained that Diamond referred to Eurasia as a single continent rather than separately to Asia, North Africa, and Europe. That’s nitpicking, as far as I’m concerned. And many of these “errors” could simply be differences of opinion. Academics are unbearably dogmatic and dismissive of those who reject their pet theories.

Some accused him of racism, although he rejected racist explanations early, forcefully, and often. That criticism is not only unsupported by Diamond’s book, it’s insulting to the reader.

The most common and far-reaching complaint was that Diamond had succumbed to the heresy of “environmental determinism.” Understandably, Diamond grounded his argument in geographic and environmental factors—but he repeatedly cited numerous other influences as well. Ultimately, of course, everything we humans do, and everything we’ve done in the millions of years since our ancestors first climbed out of the trees, has been environmentally determined.

There were complaints that Diamond had overlooked the contrast between temperate and tropical zones (he didn’t) and that he had only explained what happened 500 years ago but not subsequently (untrue). It might appear that at least some of Diamond’s critics never read the book.

However, the most aggravating criticism was that he had ignored the motives that led the industrial nations to undertake colonialism and imperialism on a broad scale. Diamond addressed only the means that enabled the colonial powers to dominate, not the reasons why they chose to do so. To my mind, that’s no error. He didn’t pretend to explain colonialism and imperialism, merely to describe how it had become possible.

Is it possible that most of these academic critics were simply bitter that Diamond hadn’t cited their own specialized research?

The roots of academic criticism

Though the critics undoubtedly uncovered a misplaced fact or unwarranted conclusion here and there through the book, the errors were exceedingly minor in the context of Diamond’s expansive hypothesis. It should be clear to any dispassionate reader that the academic reaction stemmed, above all, from narrow-mindedness and jealousy. The world of academia today is atomized. Specialties, sub-specialties, and sub-sub-specialties abound. It’s not unusual for a scholar to build a career on the study of a single obscure question that, when answered, will be of interest to virtually nobody. Interdisciplinary studies are frowned upon in most academic circles. Generalists are regarded as “not serious.” And scholars who write popular books, must less bestsellers, can expect a chilly reception from their peers.

A wealth of meaning behind the title

To understand where the academic critics went wrong, it’s useful to look at what Diamond signified by his title, Guns, Germs, and Steel. Early in his book, he dwells on the confrontation between the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro and the Inca god-king Atahuallpa. “The immediate reasons for Pizarro’s success included military technology based on guns, steel weapons [such as swords and daggers], and horses; infectious diseases endemic in Eurasia; European maritime technology; the centralized political organization of European states; and writing. The title of this book will serve as shorthand for those proximate factors.”

Diamond’s argument in a nutshell

In a Prologue, Diamond poses the question at the heart of this book. He quotes a friend in what is now Papua New Guinea from a conversation in 1972, when he was studying bird evolution there: “‘Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo [goods] and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?'” To answer the question, Diamond begins his story around the year 11,000 BCE, when the last Ice Age was drawing to a close and human beings were beginning to form villages in a few places around the world. It’s unclear whether the formation of villages preceded the deliberate cultivation and production of food, or vice versa. However, regardless of the sequence, that shift from hunter-gatherer society to agriculturally based settlements set in motion the course of events that have led to the “civilization” in which we live.

Diamond argues, convincingly, that the much greater availability of domesticable plants and large animals in Eurasia than in sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas. Furthermore, he explains that the east-west orientation of Eurasia from the Bering Strait to the Atlantic Ocean made it possible for the development of agriculture and animal husbandry to spread quickly to distant lands. By contrast, the north-south orientation of the Americas and sub-Saharan Africa—and the presence of barriers such as the Sahara Desert, the Panamanian Isthmus, and the deserts of northern Mexico and southwestern United States—impeded the spread of these (and, later, other) new technologies to the extremities of those continents. The advent of food production enabled the development of ever-larger settlements. This, in turn, spelled the emergence of labor specialization and eventually the growth of empires as well as the appearance and spread of communicable diseases contracted from domesticated animals. Those differences in historical development eventually led to the “guns, germs, and steel” that made Eurasian dominance possible—and dictated the huge differences in economic development between what today we call East and West.

Guns, Germs, and Steel is crammed with facts and densely written. It doesn’t make for light reading. But if you have any interest in understanding how the world came to be as it is, you’ll find this book highly rewarding.

It gave me a better understanding about the world history in more scientific perspectives

Guns, Germs and Steel tops the books I have ever read regarding the evolution and competition of the human race. It gave me a better understanding about the world history in more scientific perspectives. It also cleared some of my doubts and misunderstandings towards different cultures.

Although I read in original English took more time than reading in my mother tongue, it is really worth it!

My Brain Hurts

If you decide to tackle "Guns, Germs, and Steel," it would be advantageous to read chunks of the book or at least a full chapter instead of a few pages at a time. Despite a few personal stories involving the people of New Guinea, Mr. Diamond's work is very academic in its delivery. It's too bad the guy doesn't have the writing flair of Bill Bryson. Don't get me wrong, it's an interesting read, but I wonder how many people who bought this thing actually read it from cover to cover? There are portions where he lists a variety of examples to support his argument, but the stuff started evolving into so much information-overload gibberish. I challenge anyone to remember all the island names and whatnot in the chapter entitled "Speedboat to Polynesia." If you can, then congratulations! You have the big brain.

The author culls information from a variety of scientific disciplines to support his very convincing argument. Mr. Diamond blows a huge whole through the racist attitude that some races are superior to others. He also unintentionally makes a mockery, without mentioning them, of the monumentally nutty Ken Ham's Creation Museum and his delusional ilk. Mr. Diamond stresses that "Guns, Germs, and Steel" is a broad overview of how people, plants, animals, and, most importantly, societies evolved. He does not claim that everything between the covers of this thing is etched in stone and clearly stresses when certain information is inconclusive.

The Pulitzer-Prize-Winning work is exactly how I'd expect a professor to give a credible presentation. The chapters build upon the previous ones to give the reader a clear picture of how the world's societies evolved. "Guns, Germs, and Steel" is one of those works that give us layman lots to ponder. It was well worth slogging through the thing, but for your normal, everyday Dick or Jane, this isn't like reading a... ehhh... Dick-and-Jane book. It felt like homework.

great chapter on Asoka who embraced Buddhism and did a great service to it

A well researched and well written book on Indian religion and Buddhist history. Sadly Buddhism is largely extinct from the Continent, except for perhaps the Tibetan refugee and Government in exile. India now is Hindu and Muslim, with the Muslim religion outpacing the Hindu due to their uncontrolled birthrate and lack of family planning. The book has a great chapter on Asoka who embraced Buddhism and did a great service to it. The chapter on pali books also very illuminating. (written on palm leafs.) This book is available online for free. Check it out for yourself, do not take my word for it.
