A Behind-The-Scenes Look At The Making Of A Masterpiece Of Cinematic Terror

It is arguably the best film ever made for television, and one of the most terrifying and sweat-inducing movies of any kind every made. It is DUEL, that superb 1971 masterpiece of suspense directed by a young man from Phoenix, Arizona named Steven Spielberg, concerning an average businessman (Dennis Weaver) being terrorized and stalked along desert highways in Southern California by the unseen but clearly psychopathic driver of a greasy gasoline tanker truck. It is the ultimate daytime nightmare as brilliantly conceived by veteran science fiction and horror writer Richard Matheson.
And now, it is the subject of an entire book--and an excellent book.
Writer Steven Awalt looks in thorough and exacting detail at how a story that began with a frightening encounter that Matheson and fellow writer Jerry Sohl had on a canyon road in Ventura County on the day of the JFK assassination with a monstrous-looking rig, and culminated with the airing of DUEL on ABC on the night of November 13, 1971. Not only does he include the close-in details of the storyboards and the locations (all in the isolated canyon areas that lie between the San Fernando Valley and the western Mojave Desert), but he got interviews from Spielberg, Matheson, Weaver, the film's producer George Eckstein, Billy Goldenberg (who composed the film's nightmarish avant-garde score), and DUEL's first assistant director James Fargo. In reading this book, alongside a viewing of the film itself, it is remarkable that DUEL went from first frames exposed to airing on ABC in less than ten weeks, which seems extremely incredible nowadays, if not downright ridiculous, even for television. And everyone moved quite fast to make it happen, on a tight shooting schedule, and a budget that would absolutely not cover the catering on most Hollywood films nowadays. But the end result was a classic of the suspense thriller genre, and the launching pad of Spielberg's film career, which has continued to flourish well into the 21st century.
This book is a thoroughly fascinating look at the making of a great movie, and is well worth getting, especially for true cineastes and Spielberg fanatics.

If you love stories about how movies are made, this book is for you. If you're a fan of Steven Spielberg's and his career, this book is DEFINITELY for you. I cracked this open expecting a thorough account of the process and experience of making Duel. And that it is. But it's so much more than that. What I didn't expect was a biographical primer tracking every significant signpost in Spielberg's childhood, amateur film making career, and professional film making career that lead him to the point of directing Duel.
Even though this is non-fiction, it's written in a way that feels like a compelling novel. Fun, sensory style and choices of words that use a kind of gravitas Spielberg fans should welcome. If you've ever been compelled to read a book or watch a documentary about the making of a film, you should surely consider giving this a spin.

DUEL Book Is A Must For DUEL Fans !!

This book is a must-read for anyone who loves the classic movie "DUEL". it focuses on what it took to bring the movie to life from the short story by Richard Matheson. It tells about how this tv movie jump started the career of young Steven Spielberg. Prior to "DUEL", Spielberg had done some directing on various tv shows but not a movie. Spielberg and the rest of the crew that made "Duel" really went through a fast-paced schedule to complete the movie. This fast paced shooting schedule did not allow Spielberg time to review his shots on a daily basis. That led to Spielberg appearing in at least one scene as a reflection in glass.
When the movie was done it got rave reviews. However some of the studio execs. were not happy with the dramatic ending Spielberg had shot. A scene that is legendary. They pressured George Eckstein,the producer, to change the ending but he stuck by his young director.A wise decision now,looking back.
There are many quotes from the people involved and how they took to working with the then-young director. It tells how some had their whole perceptions changed after working with the enthusiastic Spielberg.Most knew when he was shooting "DUEL" that he would go on to bigger and better things.
The book details some of the scenes in the movie and what it took to film them.It also details the added scenes for the theatrical release. I only wish the book had included the dialogue from both versions to compare where they changed from television version to the theatre version. It touched on a few but I have not seen the tv version since I was a child in the early 1970's.
A picture story board is included as well as the complete teleplay written by Matheson. There are some pictures, but not nearly enough for us "Duel" freaks.I feel that some more photos from behind the scenes would have enhanced the experience. Also, if the author could have included parts of Spielberg's map of shooting locations it could have made the book perfect.
As you read make sure to check out the footnotes as some hold some interesting information.Book is a little "pricy" but worth it if you love DUEL like I do.
