Schroeder (Genesis and the Big Bang, LJ 9/15/90) is an Israeli physicist and scholar of Genesis who maintains that a properly understood Bible and a properly understood science provide consistent sets of data. In recent decades, scientific discoveries in cosmology, paleontology, and quantum physics do not demonstrate or prove the activity of God, but they do remove conflict with that activity. Rapprochement occurs when believers read the Bible on the Bible's terms, avoiding literalism, and when scientists realize that science is powerless to pronounce on a purpose for life. Schroeder is very lucid in explaining difficult scientific concepts, such as the passage of time according to the theory of relativity, and religious data, such as the original Hebrew words. Schroeder's careful and responsible handling of the data on origins from science and Genesis 1, combined with a fresh, judicious correlation between the two, is compelling. This account of creation is the latest entry in the current endeavor to drag science and religion within shouting distance of each other. Schroeder, a physicist and Bible scholar (Genesis and the Big Bang, 1990), attempts to reconcile the Genesis account of creation with current scientific knowledge about the origin of life. No doubt he is well versed in both the Bible and biology; he's also a skilled pedagogue, explaining abstract or counterintuitive concepts in lay terms. But this book will fail to convince many readers because the author so relentlessly seeks to persuade the reader of the validity of some strange theories, and because his biblical interpretations draw on an exclusively Jewish tradition, including Kabbalah, Maimonedes, and selected passages from the Talmud, which he claims ``anticipated'' later scientific discoveries. Admittedly, some of his arguments (for instance, that the sequence of Genesis creation is congruent with evolution's progression from prokaryotic to human life) are compelling. But elsewhere Schroeder less convincingly rejects the notion of random, mutation-driven evolution, arguing instead that evolution is ``channeled'' toward an outcome preprogrammed into existing DNA. Schroeder's other theories include an odd insistence upon a pre-Adamic, soulless hominid ancestor. It's important to Schroeder that the literal Adam be the first ensouled human being, and since Genesis chronology (almost 6,000 years since Adam) doesn't mesh with what science tells us of the age of humankind, Schroeder sets out to prove that the Bible only picks up the story near the close of human development. Such hermeneutical gymnastics seem strangely outdated and obscure in an often intelligent, cogently argued book. Thinking outside the box,-- a seminal effort worth a read

As a scientist in an ongoing search for truth, I have been disappointed by ham-handed efforts of the creation crowd to cling to extreme minority viewpoints of credentialed scientists from diverse fields of science that would collectively be required to support a *literal* interpretation of Genesis. Similarly, I have been mystified by scientists who reflexively dismiss the idea of some kind of intelligent design outright by way of circular reasoning, arguing that since intelligent design can never be disproven, it is not scientific and thus could not be truth, since only science can properly assess truth.
It is hard to understate, then, the moxie of Schroeder's innovative attempt to reconcile with Genesis scientifically DOMINANT paradigms (i.e. universe many billions of years old, terrestrial life hundreds of millions of years old, species variation to extensive degree by alteration or differential expression of genes). Schroeder introduces his intent thus: "In the following chapters, I attempt to avoid the subjective tendency of bending Bible to match science or science to match Bible." (softcover p.19) Whether he was successful or not is in the eye of the reader, but the explicit intent is refreshing.
This book, then, would be of particular interest to two groups:
1) Scientists who wonder how their mainstream conclusions could possibly be reconciled with ancient accounts of creation from the Hebrew Torah.
2) Jews and Christians who are discomforted by the apparent incompatability between the text of their faith versus the observed truth about our planet and universe as collected and interpreted by the VAST MAJORITY of professional scientists.
The prime example of this reconciliation is Schroeder's attempt to fit a 15-billion year old universe with the six-day account of Genesis by arguing that: 1) from a collective, "Creation-wide" perspective, time advanced differently in the primordial hot universe (time dilation), and 2) that "days" in the ancient hebrew text only adopted the terrestrial perception (instead of universal perception) of time passage upon the creation of man late in the "creation" process.
Later chapters address other issues, such as the likelihood that genetic variation by mutation at rates observed in today's laboratories (or even much greater rates) were sufficient to generate the speciation evidenced in the fossil record within the abbreviated time-frame indicated by the fossil record itself.
By virtue of his theological background and professional training (MIT-trained physicist), Schroeder is uniquely qualified to attempt such a reconciliation. However, as evidenced by several previous reviews, this training is not enough-- at least not enough to win over skeptical scientists. It may be that the sheer enormity of burgeoning data within each of the fields (molecular genetics, population genetics, paleontology, geology, as well as cosmology and particle physics) is simply too great for one individual to incorporate into solid perspective within *each and every* discipline to present an airtight case on all scientific fronts.
Previous reviewers have asserted gross inaccuracies with the science presented in this book. As a clinical neuroscientist, I am not in a position to assault or defend Schroeder on evolution, genetics, particle physics or cosmology. However, I would argue against throwing the baby out with the bathwater. For example, the latest data on cosmic background radiation indicates an accelerating expansion of the universe, and an approximate age of 13.7 billion years instead of the 15 Schroeder cites. Must this nullify the core of his whole premise? Maybe so, but not enough to discard this book out of hand.
The strength of this work is in its innovation. Schroeder rightly notes that the Bible is silent on many subjects, and actually leaves room for many observed phenomena, such as speciation and niche-filling by DNA alteration. It is only the rigid mindset of many religious individuals that closes this possibility.
The weaknesses of the book lie in the specific physical science undergirding Schroeder's arguments, as well as in his over-reliance on conjecture. I thus was left with the same mind-set I had before I read the book, namely that the simplest explanation for why the Genesis account is not borne out by the findings of mainstream science is that Genesis was inspired and spoke great *truth* on a metaphorical and didactic level-- but not at a literal level.
On the whole, I found it a fascinating read. In accord with previous reviewers, I liken this effort to a Model-T. Crude in the light of today, yet innovative at its introduction, with the potential to be honed with further investment in this line of reasoning. This whole line of inquiry would benefit enormously by some kind of COLLABORATIVE work, with each chapter penned by a bona-fide expert in that field of the physical sciences, where this expert can build a much more solid case in conjunction with the totality of data in his or her field. I could even envision anonymous contribution, inasmuch as publicly arguing for some kind of intelligent designer is probably not conducive to garnering tenure in the Paleontology Department of Secular State University....

Not your standard LitRPG

Dark, overly simplistic game detail/design/presentation, melodramatic. From my personal point of view this is by far the worst LitRPG work I have read. It focuses on the societal and personal issues presented in a what-if scaremonger type story where other LitRPG tends to focus on the actual game. The whole feel of the book is of someone who doesn't know or understand the MMORPG world crying wolf about less than realistic possibilities in our future. If you are a fan of LitRPG and MMOs in general, you will need to refrain from pigeon holing it into the same category as other LitRPG works.

Not really my type of ~litrpg.

Another reviewer pointed out the same issues I had with this book. That person gave a 2 star as well. If you want a book more about life outside of the game, this is for you. I prefer my litrpg game heavy. This isn't. If you know nothing about mmorpg's or the litrpg genre, you will probably like this series. I have always hated the people who view games and gamers the way this author portrays them. Just because we like playing videogames does not mean that we, or our families, are dysfunctional. EVERYONE has a hobby, their own personal escape.

This book is on my top ten for worst books i have ever read. I'm sorry but unless you have a world where the "big bad" controls the populace by an iron will and is also developing a virtual reality game for profit purposes, the acts perpetrated by the games admins cannot be explained rationally. The people who have "gone all in" are still within the game. They can be identified as living persons by at least the people close to them. it would take a matter of seconds to interrogate one person on the hidden secrets loved ones know about them to identify the person in question. And this author decides that the game developers, regular fictional people, will instead instigate a genocide on the "all in players" to clean them from the server so they can pronounce that the bug is fixed. What a terrible way to solve this problem. Hell it would have been easier for the admins to just create a server shard where the "All in" players go and live out their new lives. Heck you could probably make a whole series over them and how people react to videos of the world that they are living in. a type of hunger games meets ender's game meets game of thrones book series that would be very good if thought out. So much wasted. A horrid climax to an otherwise decent novel.

About the Author

DEBBY HERBENICK, PHD, MPH, is a research scientist and lecturer at Indiana University and coordinator of the Kinsey Institute Sexuality Information Service for Students (KISISS). She writes weekly and monthly sex advice columns for newspapers and magazines including Men's Health and Time Out Chicago. She is often called upon as a sex expert by various media from the Today show and Discovery Health to the New York Times. She lives in Bloomington, Indiana.

Want better sex? Pleasure? Orgasms? Read this book!

Although a newer sex book, it is already my favorite sex book to recommend (I work as a sex educator for adults). It's well written, easy to read, has great diagrams, fun quizzes at the start of every chapter and - best of all - the information is GREAT. It's right on, it's accurate and written by someone who totally knows what she is talking about.

A major frustration of mine is that a lot of sex books are written by random people who don't know what they're talking about but act like they do. These are the same people who wind up doing things that their partners find unpleasurable but they do them because they read it in a book or magazine (that was wrong!). FINALLY - a book written by an expert who is fun, smart, and clearly loves sex! Dr. Debby writes about sex the way it should be written about - like it's fun and something we can learn to find pleasurable, exciting and connecting with our partners.

This is the kind of book that you will read over and over again, or refer to when you want more tips on sex toys, vibrators, lubricants, how to talk to your partner about sex, how to talk with your partner *during* sex, how to kick your desire back into higher (or at least decent) gear, and how to have a healthy enough life that it spills over into your sex life.

I recommend this book all the time to women and couples. It's a gold mine of information and encouragement and sure to make your sex life better (even if you don't have a partner). Enjoy!!

Because It Feels Good: A Woman's Guide to Sexcual Pleasure and Satisfaction

I highly recommend this book to any generation, but most particularly to MY generation, the Zooomer (the 50 plus) woman. We were raised with so little information about our own sexuality by our mothers that, for me personally, I did not have my sexual awakening until I was in my 50's. I was married for over 30 years and only a handful of times did I experience pleasure, but an orgasm? never! I thought something was wrong with me, very seriously wrong. I talked to an OBGYN who thankfully was from Europe and very open and she recommended reading material to me. I found that I was not as educated about my own body as I thought. It took an intimate experience after my separation, with someone I had known and not been in touch with for over 40 years, to discover what "love making", not SEX, was all about and how pleasurable and wonderful it could be with someone you are compatible with. Compatibility is important but more than that I found out that yes, body chemistry plays an intrinsic role in the pleasure factor. When you make love you do so not just with your body, then it's just Sex, but with your whole being: body, mind, soul and spirit. My lover is also a very good listener and very tuned into what works for me and I found that I actually, finally also enjoyed pleasuring him, an experience I never really had.
Reading this book has allowed me to become "intimate" with my own body and what makes it work, and HOW and why things give pleasure. I feel like I have finally found that "secret" I have been searching for all my life.... in my Lover and in this book. That emptiness that was in my life has now been filled, and we both have a very vigourous and active sex life and hope to until we are both very, very old.... I highly recommend this book to a generation of women who were never told, that making love was something enjoyable and not just to be endured!

This book was okay, but not really for women who are in tune with their bodies, and looking to spice up their love life. This seems to be more geared to those not comfortable with sex and their own bodies.

Quite impressive

Yes, this book is a good overview of the major themes in generative art and an excellent intro for techniques to generative art-making and Processing in general. More importantly though, it's also filled with insights into the why's and how's of Mr. Pearsons own work and that of the work that he's writing about, which is just as important; understanding not just what a pretty graphic is, but what it models, how it relates to the world. I find this lacking in a lot of texts about generative art or computer art and it's one of the fundamental elements of understanding and creating your own generative artwork, the correlations between what we see on the screen and what we see in around and beyond it. Mr. Pearson not only codes well and makes pretty things but also thinks and writes quite clearly, and he puts all those skills to use here to tell a story of curiosity and its dividends.

A great book to learn Processing

This book may be a little different than your average book on programming. It doesn't start with the obvious computer science theory like functions and variables you would expect. The first chapter immediately dives into the world of generative art, teaches you some theory, and shows you art by by some key figures in today's generative art scene.

Chapter two was kind of boring for me, as it just teaches the basics of programming in the Processing language. But if you haven't programmed before, you'll definitely need this bit. It's written in clear, understandable language, and takes you through all programming concepts you need at a good pace before you can dive into the more complex stuff.

Starting with chapter three, the author turns it up a notch. Whereas other books briefly mention perlin noise, this book digs deeper into the subject, showing you how it can be used to deform lines and circles. I've learned a few new tricks reading these chapters. The book ends with traditional computer algorithms like fractals and cellular automata, and shows you how they can be used and adapted in a creative way.

This is a great book to learn a programming language by exploring how small changes can create a different visual output. You'll learn that the process in creating art is equally important as the output you create. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I hope you do too.

Buy this book if you are looking for something in between a coding manual, reference book, discussion of and a history of Generative Art. Matt has hit upon a good balance for those who find a pure programming book makes their eyes glaze over and want to understand the why aswell as the how. The book is structured so that the introduction is gradual without getting too heavy on the coding side of things for too long. After that the book deepens your understanding and teaches you some of the more complex and beautiful algorithms used in GenArt. Not only is it an informative an interesting read in its own right it is also a useful reference to come back to again and again.

Not the next part after Zombieslayer

I am a huge fan of Gotrek and Felix. Last year when the anthology came out, I feared that Nathan Long might not be continuing if Black Library was letting other authors pen stories. Now that this book was released by one of the authors from that anthology...well I decided to try it.
First off, this does not continue the story from Zombieslayer. In fact, it takes place somewhere back in the first books by William King. I had a hard time placing it, then just gave up and I am now considering it as a side story.
Edit the first: I just read up on Josh Reynolds blog, this is supposed to take place just after Trollslayer, the first book. And this, and the other stories that are coming out are supposed to be non continuity. And that the main story is on hiatus. So, in that light, I am less confused and can see this book in a better frame of mind.
Edit the second: So after going back and rereading Trollslayer, this follows Gotrek and Felix's characters pretty good for that period of their travels. But the author still missed both of their signature weapons characteristic runes glowing in the presence of warp magics and daemons.
Overall, this is a well written story and good for those who may not have read much of Gotrek and Felix before. For those who have followed the saga, go back to the first book to reacquaint yourself to a younger Felix and harsher Gotrek. It makes for a much better read.

Unsure of the timeline and new writer

Ok, this book is not terrible....Josh Reynolds has written a few shorts about Gotrek and Felix, and now is apparently taking the helm after Nathan Long....who himself took over from William King. My problems with this book relate mostly to my disappointment of not having a continuation of the tale left off at Zombie Slayer. I was honestly really hoping to read more of Snorri Nosebiter and Katarina. I haven't read the other stories Josh Reynolds wrote about Gotrek and Felix, so I can't say how his other work fares. He gets it partly right, so it obvious he has read at least some of the preceding works.
When does this story take place in their saga? Felix has Karaghul, Gotrek has one eye. I think it takes place some time before Skaven Slayer? If so, then why do all the other slayers refer to Gotrek as a 'doom thief'? We haven't met all that many other slayers before Skaven Slayer and Gotrek hasn't stolen the dooms he would in the stories in the omnibuses. Also, much is made of his axe, which we know (or heavily suspect) is Grimnir's own axe. We readers find that out much later. Lastly, Gotrek's obsession with his doom and frustration at failing to meet it seems more informed by all the others stories that have been written before than should exist when the story is based.
To be fair, Gotrek can be hard to write for. He has a past, a secret shame much hinted at, many adventures, surliness, honor, many other things that I love about this character. In this book, there is little humor, no drunk Gotrek, and a Gotrek that doesn't feel right.
Felix, the character we hear from, we can say we know more of. Felix is an accomplished deadly swordsman, who is always worried this is last fight, despite his skills. This book plays that worry to an irritating degree. Why is Felix refered to now a 'Remembrancer' rather than a 'Rememberer'?
I did like a few things, Canto the Unsworn as an enemy has a story to tell. It also involves the chaos dwarfs, which I have not read much about, Khorreg the Hell Worker is another character in need of fleshing out. Biter the Slayer is some of the only, very welcome, humor. Battles are fun and bloody, and Reynolds gets Gotrek being an engine of carnage right.
My last gripe is pretty much with all Warhammer books, every battle massacres so many troops, be they Empire or Dwarf, that you wonder how the Empire can exist, or the slow breeding Dwarves have any holds left? It just gets exhausting....whole armies massacred by the forces of Chaos, Greenskins, Skaven, undead, etc, etc....
Please please Black Library follow up after Zombie Slayer.

Readers who are very familiar with the main characters may find themselves disappointed.

Karak Kadrin is in the Worlds Edge Mountains and is ruled by Slayer King Ungrim Ironfist. The Slayer King and the dwarfs of Karak Kadrin protect the gate, fighting off any dark forces that attempt to pass through it. Now the largest Chaos horde to spill out of the north since the time of Magnus the Pious is at their door. Slayer Gotrek Gurnisson and his human companion, Felix Jaeger, arrive to find Karak Kadrin under siege. This is led by the warlord named Garmr Hrodvitnir, who intends to unleash Chaos unlike any known before.

As an army of Slayers head out to fulfill an ancient prophecy, Gotrek and Felix are forced to remain at Slayer Keep. According to the aged priest, should Gurnisson march toward and meet the Chaos army in battle, he will find the death he seeks, but the world will die with him. This, of course, does not sit well with Gotrek.

** TWO STARS! I am a big fan of the Gotrek and Felix series. I look forward to each release, eager to read the next adventure. I have come to enjoy Gotrek's surliness, his jumping into the middle of any battle, and his scowls - to name only a few traits I adore. As for Felix, I am very familiar with his brave and skillful fighting. I now rely on seeing Felix by the Slayer's side no matter what comes. The human is a bad a...Well, he is deadly, especially with a sword. Occasionally the pair will have company in their travels. One such companion is Snorri Thungrimsson, a Slayer who is usually crazed and refers to himself in the Third Person. There is no one else quite like Snorri.

This story has all three of these characters that I enjoy so much; however, none of them are portrayed correctly. Gotrek is not as moody and he does not put away the ale like water. Felix spends most of his time in battle on his tail. He barely parries swings from his opponents and is constantly being saved by others. Felix does not seem to remember how to fight until late in the story. His spine finally stiffens about the same time. Up until then, Felix mutters under his breath and when Gotrek asks what he said, Felix actually cringes and apologizes. There are no snarky remarks to earn Gotrek's displeasure or even much of a scowl. Snorri is not the insane comic relief who goes berserk in battle. In this story he is very serious. He is the King's hearth-warden, his Reckoner, and his Remembrancer. Snorri is the King's right-hand. He advises King Ironfist, helps strategize, and is a total bore.

Though the characters do not act normal, the battlefield still runs red with blood. Readers who are not already familiar with the characters will probably love this story, but diehard fans may find themselves irritated. **

An experienced teacher who might disagree with the author about details of emphasis can nevertheless use the book for a course with his or her own priorities. This is new and a real achievement. About the Author
Julian Ross has been actively involved in research on surface chemistry and catalysis for more than 50 years. Although he has always worked in an academic environment (UK, The Netherlands and Ireland), he has always been closely associated with industrial ctalysis companies and has acted as consultant to many those active in the field. He is author of more than 200 publications as well as of a significant number of patents on catalysts and processes; his work has been highly cited, his h-index in early 2014 being 40. He has supervised more than 50 PhD theses and some 20 post-doctoral researchers working on topics such as natural gas conversion, selective oxidation, membrane catalysis, zirconia as a catalyst support, environmental catalysis and biomass conversion. He was founding editor of Catalysis Today (Elsevier) and acted as Senior Editor of this journal for more than 25 years; in that capacity, he was responsible for commissioning and supervising the production of specialised issues reporting research on most modern areas of catalysis.

excellent coverage of the subject

This is a welcome text for the student and practicing specialist. It covers topics that are sometimes overlooked or minimized in other texts--e.g., catalyst preparation. 'The industrial scientist will benefit from examples of commercially important catalytic reactions in a dedicated chapter--showing how the principles described earlier in the book are put into practice.

The author also makes use of the internet and modern search utilities. student to carrying out a series of "tasks" based on searches of the internet

I would recommend this book highly, especially as a text for the modern student.

About the Author

Susan Illene served in the US Army for eleven years and worked as a human resources specialist and an Arabic linguist. She served two deployments to Iraq, and after leaving the army, she studied history at the University of Oklahoma. She and her husband currently live in Oklahoma with two high-maintenance cats doing their best to help her write her books.

In addition to Stalked by Flames, she is also the author of the bestselling dark-fantasy books, the Sensor Series.

Great Start to a Series

This is the first book of a new series by Susan Illene. Her other series, the Sensor series, is one of my favorites. Ms. Illene describes her books as urban fantasy with romance, which translates to the stories being fairly gritty.

Having just graduated from university in Oklahoma, Bailey stops by the school library on her way home to Texas. While she’s at the library, green dragons attack, killing tens, if not hundreds, of people. Saving two women from a green dragon, Bailey notices that unlike everyone else, she doesn't burn. During the battle a red dragon kills a green one and reveals himself to be a shifter. He indicates that she is different and he’ll see her again soon. When he does return, Aiden reveals that Bailey is a dragon slayer and that Aiden will train her to use her abilities although why he would do so remains a mystery.

This book balances setting up the players, both human and dragon with a strong plot. There is a bare minimum explanation for the reemergence of the dragons, which is how I like it. The details of how the humans are surviving the shutdown of all utilities is fascinating and well thought out. There’s lots of action as everyone in the city competes for the same resources while trying to hide from green dragon attacks. Ms. Illene writes her characters with both good and bad qualities, which made the plot difficult to predict.

My one criticism is the romance between Aidan (the red dragon) and Bailey. There was no sign of anything happening between them until near the end of the book when out of nowhere they kiss. Aidan has been training Bailey for weeks, but we only see a couple of sessions and nothing that would suggest they are developing feelings for each other. I would have been fine having the relationship develop with a slow burn instead of coming out of nowhere.

Overall, a good book that I enjoyed reading.

I think this series has potential, but there were several aspects that kept me from really enjoying this read

I was really looking forward to reading about an apocalypse type atmosphere where dragons were the culprits. Throw in a dragon slayer, and it sounded like a solid read. While I found it was an ok read, I did have some issues with it. Here is my breakdown:

The pros:
* Creative story concept
* Offered on kindleunlimited
* The action was decent

The cons:
* I found the romance to be very lacking - I'd rate it PG at best
* It had a young adult feel to it even though the characters were supposed to be older - they all had a very juvenile feel to them
* In the middle of this read, I found myself losing interest a few times - there were some definite slow spells during the plot
* I wanted more with the heroine being a dragon slayer........I get that she had to train to become this, but it seemed like that was all she did this entire read - scavenge and train - I wanted more action on her part
* I wasn’t a fan of the writing style - the execution of this story felt tiring at times

Overall, I think this young adult read does have some potential, but this book didn’t intrigue me enough to continue the series.

Stalked by Flames/Lost track of time

I have several books on my kindle waiting to be read & when I recvd the
email that this book was available , I ordered it, thinking it might be an interesting quick read. I started reading immediately & imagine my surprise when I realized I missed dinner, a very good dinner ( my husband is a great cook! ) . It was a quick read because I couldn't/ wouldn't put it down.
If you decide to get this book, make sure you eat first. I am looking forward the next installment and will make sure I have had a good meal first. Enjoy!
