I got this collection for the school library where I am the librarian. The students love Goosebumps! I do wish I had been able to find them in hardback just so they would last longer. I had several students put this series in my suggestion basket and I want them to enjoy reading so I try to get what they want, hardback or not.

About the Author
David Lehman, the series editor of The Best American Poetry, is also the editor of the Oxford Book of American Poetry. His books of poetry include Poems in the Manner Of, New and Selected Poems, Yeshiva Boys, When a Woman Loves a Man, and The Daily Mirror. His most recent nonfiction book is Sinatra’s Century. He teaches at The New School and lives in New York City and Ithaca, New York.

Edward Hirsch is an American poet and critic who wrote national bestseller How to Read a Poem and Fall in Love with Poetry. No one predicted we’d be sitting there,

just come in from a blizzard to that bar,

and three beached fishermen in the corner

would interrupt their beans to stare at us,

then return to eating, since we were strange,

but cold enough to be left alone,

and that to expect their calm dismissal

of our being there showed we understood

how things worked then, in the dead decades,

after most of the city had vanished

on trains, or had been drowned in foreign ports;

and therefore, when the priest arrived

with his ice-crusted shawl and frozen cross,

crooning mangled hymns, his head gone to praise,

we’d think it right to offer him a seat,

would carry his stiff gloves to the fire,

and fill his glass with wine and pass him bread,

and would suffer the blessings he put

upon the empty wombs of our soup bowls;

and who knew we’d pretend to sing each verse

of the tune he’d use to condemn us,

but would have no answer to his slammed fist,

nor the thing he’d yell to be overheard

by everyone there—when you stand this close

to the other side, don’t embarrass yourselves

with hope—as if that would be saying it all,

as if he knew we already stood there,

as if we could mount some kind of defense

Wonderful selection this year

Last year I had trouble finding any poems I really liked. This year, I can't find any I dislike. A wide range of styles and themes, wonderfully crafted. I keep saying, "I wish I wrote that!"

Engaging and enthralling in its simplicity

'When someone dies, the clothes are so sad." With lines so simple and poignant as this from Emily Fragos, the collection of the Best American Poetry of 2016 took me by the hand and turned the pages for me, one after another through more than sixty poems. It is an incredible journey into a genre that I rarely dip into. With an eclectic range of styles from the most formal, academic, and even bizarre, there are words, imagery and narratives for all of us.
As I don't normally read poetry, not since leaving London University in my twenties, I appreciated the foreword by David Lehman who mixed the past understanding of the role of such writing and brought into the present. The following introduction by the guest editor Edward Hirsch reminded me that "poetry is not dead. On the contrary it is an art form that continues to thrive in unexpected ways, engaging and evading its own history, setting out on unknown paths."
This anthology took me down little know streets, into lives and emotions that are so detailed and dense with all the senses that it left me wanting more. More.

Edward Hirsch for the win

I purchased this book because of the guest editor, Edward Hirsch. He does an amazing jog of curating this collection. Take the time to read his introduction. As always, he is insightful, smart, and entertaining. I also really appreciate his philosophy behind choosing these pieces, as he was very conscious of trying to represent the diversity of the American voice. Sometimes this series is hit and miss, but this time was a definite win!

Five helpful appendixes — containing such study aids as a factor table, computer-plotted graphs, a table of indices, the Greek alphabet, and a list of symbols — and a bibliography round out this well-written text, which is directed toward undergraduate majors and beginning graduate students in mathematics. No post-calculus prerequisite is assumed. 1977 edition.

Good for self teaching

I am currently working through this book, and I really like the format, which is usually a small, digestible chapter followed by a set of exercises (usually 10 or so). Quite a wide variety of topics are covered including congruences, primitive roots, analysis of the number theoretic functions (e.g., the number of primes below x), and a little on diophantine approximations and continued fractions. Nothing post-calculus is used in the book except for some algebraic structures such as fields and rings, however, they are fully explained at the beginning of the book. (And some previous acquaintance with these would probably be good.) The exercises are especially good, being not too easy and not too hard. In response to the review below, to actually understand math like this you must be willing to do some work yourself. If you are looking to sit back in your easy chair and be entertained, then you should buy a book on the history of number theory, not a textbook.

Very detailed and interesting.

Although by no means an easy read, this book is very detailed and informative. Math phobic people need not apply, however, because it gets very technical after the first chapter. I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone (probably not for pre-college people) who enjoys a challenging read.

Good Book

This book is very well written and organized;
the author clearly loves the subject and writes with genuine feeling for it.
I found the proofs easy to follow; there are plenty of exercises.
The books covers the linear diophantine equation, quadratic reciprocity,
Fermat's theorem, Lagrange's theorem on a number expressed as a sum of 4 squares,
Pell's equation and other nice stuff.
A nice feature is the historical asides on past number theorists.
It is well suited for self-study, and is pitched at the undergraduate level
- and the price can't be beat.

Though Lee appreciated the critical acclaim, she found the unrelenting demands for interviews, public appearances, and personal contact increasingly unwelcome and withdrew. Given the writer’s refusal to grant access to any biographer and her closest friends’ and relatives’ reluctance to discuss her, Madden has done a fine job of researching the novelist’s life and presenting it with respect for her point of view. The sensitive treatment of race relations during Lee’s youth and the section on three trials that may have inspired parts of her novel will interest students researching To Kill a Mockingbird. Not much new here

I just read "Mockingbird" by Shields and "Up Close" back to back. Shields book was done in 2006, "Up Close" in 2009. There was very little new in "Up Close" that wasn't covered much better and in more detail by Shields. In fact, a lot of the authors' comments seemed almost exact. It's quite amazing that most the citations used were exactly the same. The photo cover for "Up Close" is also the same photo on the back of "Mockingbird," just a mirror version. This version seems a summary of the earlier book. If one wants the shorter version, apparently geared to younger than adult readers, "Up Close" will do, but Shields has also done a "for young readers" version. "Up Close" does update Lee's status since 2006, but that's only 5 or 6 small pages in the last chapter. Madden acknowledges Shields' work as an "unofficial biography," but Harper Lee also declined to cooperate with Madden's work, only wished her "the best, whether [she] pursued the project or not." Regardless of which you read, so far, there are no definitive answers to readers' most often asked questions. Facts are provided as available; some suppositions are drawn. The conclusions are up to the reader.

Rise B. Axelrod is McSweeney Professor of Rhetoric and Teaching Excellence, Emeritus, at the University of California, Riverside, where she was also director of English Composition. She has previously been professor of English at California State University, San Bernardino; director of the College Expository Program at the University of Colorado, Boulder; and assistant director of the Third College (now Thurgood Marshall College)�Composition Program at the University of California, San Diego. She is the co-author, with Charles R. Cooper, of the best-selling textbook The St. Martin's Guide to Writing as well as The Concise Guide to Writing and Reading Critically, Writing Well. �Charles R. Cooper is an emeritus professor at the University of California, San Diego. E-textbook version does NOT have the Integrated Media

If your course requires you to use the integrated media--DO NOT PURCHASE the Kindle E-textbook version. It does not come with the book. Either purchase the hard copy or find alternate e-versions of the book that actually come with integrated media. I purchased this and am very annoyed at this point. The media is a necessary part for my wife's class so we will have to find a workaround until an actual solution is found.

Einstein Meadows now benefits from a waiting list of buyers and no Homeowners Association dues.So how does a neighborhood go from stagnation to rejuvenation in such a short time? We invite you to join us on an incredible adventure, which was a life-altering experience. Moving to a new neighborhood can have many unexpected consequences - none of which are easily predictable from reading typical retirement guides. But, this is fiction and anything can happen at Einstein Meadows! Sometimes finding the right location has very little to do with the climate. It's not just where in the world you want to be - or what type of dwelling you desire - it might come down to who lives next door or down the street. Retirement communities make many promises in their advertisements and especially when you first visit. Einstein Meadows offered the possibility of a university culture transplanted into suburbia - that sounded great to us. After all, who needs a golf course when you can have equestrian trails? We humbly offer a cautionary, albeit fictional tale about what might lie beyond the entrance gates of your new community. We recognize that many people are afraid of change and attempt to mandate conformity. Perhaps you share this belief, especially if you already live in a retirement community and have sat through board meetings where the officials were meditating on whether a flea has a belly button or making an elephant out of a fly. In our travels, we heard so many laments about senior developments that we decided to write a story that demonstrates that change is possible and that there are always healthier paths. You could think of this novel as a fanciful and humorous look at retirement communities. Although you probably read silently, this book is great fun to read out loud with a group of friends. They can spontaneously adapt to the different characters' voices, and turn any party into a happening. We liberally sprinkled Yiddish words throughout the book, and they really enhance the oral reading experience. These colorful expressions are fun to use in everyday life. We define them in the Yiddish dictionary at the end of the book. If you're not sure how to pronounce the words, just say them with confidence and plenty of feeling. And if you can clear your throat spontaneously, so much the better! You might want to watch movies starring Woody Allen, Mel Brooks or Gene Wilder to perfect your delivery. A motley crew of seniors rescuing their retirement home by growing medicinal marijuana. When does the movie come out? The book was chapter after chapter of laughs. Caught myself wishing a few times that I had retired to Einstein Medows where I could enjoy the gardens and the never dull dynamic. Eagerly awaiting volume 2 and a movie and TV spin off.

Chapter to chapter, Einstein Meadows: The Unspoken Perils & Thrills of Living in a Retirement Community was both zany and madcap. The book was a quick read. I love the short chapters and the longer chapters being scattered with subheadings. It created a quick moving unpredictable type of mayhem, somewhat like the feeling one gets in watching a Marx Brothers’ movie. Einstein Meadows makes heavy use of Yiddish references and therefore I was happy to find the Yiddish to English dictionary in the back of the book. Not being of Jewish heritage, some of the references were obscure but quickly became understandable with a simple flip to the dictionary. The list of characters, including Sigmund Freud, grew ever longer as the book progressed and consisted of wild but metaphorically meaningful names. The characters often reminded me of the Larry, Darryl and Darryl sketches on The Bob Newhart Show of the mid-seventies in which Larry’s outrageous stories often held more truth than fiction. I also enjoyed the insertion of Shakespearean-esque asides by the authors. Their appearance here and there drew me into the story and gave me a sense of being a personal confidant of Ned and Nancy Engel the authors and primary characters of this fictional fantasy.
The book ends with a tantalizing “TO BE CONTINUED.” I can’t wait.

In the second volume, Biodynamics: Circulation, the physiology of blood circulation is analyzed by the engineering method.
