Readable Translation and Fair Notes

The first thing to notice about this translation of Justin Martyr's First and Second Apologies is that the text of the Apologies themselves is only 62 pages, although the book weighs in at 245. The majority of the remaining pages are notes on the text, so the book is heavily footnoted with the notes encapsulating the translator's views on Justin and engagement with the scholarly consensus.

Reading Justin is an excellent experience and this translation is quite readable. The Apologies contain many scripture references but most of them aren't interpreted in the way that almost any modern person would. At one point in the notes (note 315 on page 162) the translator refers to Justin's reading of a particular passage as "fanciful exegesis" and notes that Justin, "Quotes Old Testament proof-texts that sometimes appear to have been picked at random" but says that this, "Should not blind us to his fundamentally biblical outlook." This sums up the way that the translator approaches Justin in the notes, with much forgiveness and allowance for his place in history. Apparently this is not always the case as quotes in the book from other scholars indicate that there is certainly a strong set of opinions that Justin was rather simple-minded and so no small effort is expended on the part of the translator to refute these opinions. If you are into objectivity in your "scholarship" then this might bother you as it often can come across as being rather biased toward Justin, but I took it as simply being fair and appreciated it as such.

This was a wonderful book. I just couldnt put it down. Its the third book in the Ancient Christian Writers that I purchased.

I learned a lot from reading St Justin Apology in defense of Christianity of the roots of Christian beliefs. He section on the sacraments, "especially the Eucharist" is wonderful. Other books from the series I recommend The Didache, St Ignatious, and Clement.

Throughout this work Justin tells the reader how he believes demons are involved in pagan religion, defends the Church against accusations of immorality, and touches on his beliefs about the Logos.

The endnotes are fantastic informative throughout.

Every day the Ottoman navy sailed deep into the Golden Horn to wreak havoc with Byzantine defenders. The Byzantines could have filled the entrance, but a permanent blockage of the inlet was not a good solution since they needed the aid brought in by Venetian boats and other European vessels. Then they had a bright idea. They cast a huge chain that could be extended across the entrance. The chain could be lowered to admit friendly vessels when they wanted. One morning the Ottomans had an unpleasant surprise when they found that their boats could not sail past the chain into the Golden Horn. They also found that no amount of force could break, destroy or dislodge the chain. They had thus suffered their biggest setback since they laid the siege.

Not to be deterred by any obstacle, the Ottomans had a flash of genius of their own. They constructed a track that extended from the sea over a mountain into the Golden Horn. They built huge pulleys with the strongest ropes they could come up with and oiled the track. One night thousands of soldiers pulled the boats of the Ottoman Navy over the mountain into the Golden Horn. When they woke up the Byzantines had an unpleasant surprise waiting for them, Ottoman boats in the Golden Horn. This was a turning point for the defenders who realised that their city was not as invincible as they believed.

Most of us face seemingly insurmountable obstacles in our lives placed by employers, government, competitors, or adversaries. In this age of regulatory freaks nerdy bureaucrats and politicians who have not had to make a single penny in the marketplace are creeping more and more into the world of business to justify their existence. When we meet a strong obstacle like the Chain of Constantinople our first instinct is to fight to break it to remove it. Then we may waste time with the futile task of trying to reason with the people who placed it there, a power game where the odds are against most of us. It may occur to us to go around the obstacle instead of fighting and resisting it. That's also called finding a loophole or a big enough hole to allow passage through the Chain. Good lawyers, and there are not many of them around, are wonderful creative thinkers that specialize in finding those holes, if your problem is a stupid piece of legislation created by bureaucrats. However, holes, loopholes and a suitable circumvention of the obstacle cannot always be found even by professionals.

We are creatures of habit, and our most dominant and compelling habit is our habit of thinking, which creates our perceptions and beliefs. Somewhere behind our belief may lurk the solution that escaped our perception of the problem. Unconventional solutions generally hide behind our beliefs about what is possible, and what we can and cannot do. Somebody must have said at that time "But we cannot sail on land." You cannot sail on land but you can move your boats over the mountain.

A TRULY ENLIGHTENING BOOK

It's amazing that someone who hasn't lived in Turkey for a long time would know more about Ottoman history than most Turkish intellectuals. I especially enjoyed the part about how a Central Asian nomadic people were transformed into a Eurasian nation, starting in Asia Minor and crowning at Topkapi Palace.
The author showed the courtesy of avoiding the word "Harem", although we know what he meant. But this is a book with a lot of practical advice from the “Sultan" himself about business and everyday problems, including personal, military, or corporate issues. I should have known, as a Trade Commissioner for Canada, that Turks signed history's first free trade agreement. When I meet obstacles I'll remember the chain across the Golden Horn and how Mehmet The Conqueror overcame it by practicing lateral thinking. Can you set your enterprise on the road to greatness just by changing your purpose and perspective? It now sounds logical to me. The author has turned history into an enjoyable and useful reading and thinking experience for everyone.
I believe the book can be made into an elective course to be taught in business schools. Ottoman history both during its glory and decline offers a great deal of insight for business executives for strategic decisions as well as for professionals who need to analyze complex situations and acquire the vision to tackle them. This is an inspiring and entertaining book, a must read for knowledge and pleasure.

thought I was only getting a history book about the Ottoman Empire but this turned out to be a treasure chest of useful advice I can use in business. It's a different view of Ottoman Turks and how you can use their tactics and strategy to win in 21st century problems. Very well written. I think I'm going to try one of those tactics in my court case.

I originally owned the 1st and 2nd editions

of this book and I purchasd this, the fourth edition, hoping it would contain material about digital transmissions. This edition does have updated information over earlier editions but alas, doesn't contain anything on digital. Its publication date (1998) is too early for that. I am aware (from research elsewhere) that as far as digital transmissions go, it doesn't matter how old the antennas is. An older antenna will still collect and distribute a digital signal just like a new one that is advertised as "digital". So while I understand that any antenna will collect and transmit a digital signal, I purchased this looking for an update on digital technology. Are there other factors or elements to consider when installing an antenna for optimal digital reception?

Before Obama appointed Hillary as Secretary of State, he asked her to sign a memorandum that required both Bill and Hillary to disclose donors to the Clinton Foundation, and that would agree to a review of each speaking engagement before either accepted payments for their speeches. However, when Algeria's government contributed $500,000 in 2010 for earthquake relief in Haiti, the Foundation did not notify the State Department until 2015.

The second chapter of the book is about Bill's uranium mining deals in Kazakhstan in 2005. That year he'd traveled to Kazakhstan with Frank Giustra to meet with President Nazarbayev. The meeting was about the Foundation's work on AIDS, with Giustra trying to gain mining rights in Kazakhstan. After the meeting, Bil praised Nazarbayev and recommended that Kazakhstan head to Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe - despite Nazarbayev and his government's violations of human rights. Giustra gained access to the mining rights he wanted, and shortly afterwards donated over $30 million to the Clinton Foundation. Nazarbayev remained in power until 2015 - continuing restrictions on practice of religion, freedom of speech, and public assembly. The collective commitments and donations from investors who profited from the deal ultimately exceeded $145 million.

Between 2009 and 2013, the Russian State Atomic Nuclear Agency gained control over a Canadian company (Uranium One) with mining interests in Asia and the U.S. The U.S. government agreed to this deal, while Hillary was secretary of state. Ian Telfer, chairman of Uranium One had arranged for $2.5 million to be given the Foundation at the beginning of 2007. This donation had not been properly disclosed in accordance with the memorandum Bill and Hillary signed before she became Secretary of State.

India gained nuclear weapons capability in 1998. In response, Bill Clinton put restrictions regarding nuclear technology exports to India. After leaving office he changed his opinion at the time Sant Chatwal, an Indian-American businessman began donating to the Clinton Foundation. In 2008, when a bill was put forward relaxing some of the sanctions against India's nuclear weapons program, Hillary voted for it.

When Hillary left the State Department, the Clintons were freed from the memorandum's restrictions. In 2015, the Foundation raised over $250 million - with large amounts from the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

It is common that Presidents receive large speaking fees after they leave office, but over time these fees drip. That occurred to Bill Clinton - his fees declined between 2001 and 2008. But soon after Hillary became Secretary of Sate in 2009, his speaking fees rose dramatically. Between 2013 and 2015, Hillary spoke to 82 trade groups and companies - totaling over $21 million, at $225,000/speech. Hillary earned an additional $4.1 million speaking to the financial services industry

The earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010 killed over 220,000. The Clinton used money from American taxpayers to finance a clothing factory in northern Haiti, an area unaffected by the earthquake. Great sums of money were also spent there on a project that displaced local farmers. he greatest beneficiaries were retailers such as GAP and Target, who gained access to cheap Haitian labor. The Fischer family (founded GAP) and the Dayton family (founded Target) are no longer donors to the Clinton Foundation. Around $13.5 billion was donated to Haiti, the government continues to struggle with political dysfunction. During rebuilding efforts, large amounts of human waste were dumped into the Artibonite River (Haiti's larges) causing a cholera epidemic that killed 9,000.

botanical latin. not for the novice.

This is a great book, but much understanding of the subject is needed before hand for a person to really get much out of it. It is a great purchase for serious horticulturists, but if you are just a weekend gardener this is not the book for you. If you specialize in a certain Genera and more knowledge of specie name basis is what you want this is a good buy.
