The author has created yet another masterpiece. These are enjoyable, accessible stories. I completely identify with the soft, feminine features of the main character Corey. Also, I love the step mom's name, Stacy. I used to work with a Stacey that completely exposed my natural sissy nature. I could read this book 20 times. I thoroughly loved every word.

kind of a let down...

I wanted to read this for sometime and all that want was left wanting at the finish. Half the book is some other author giving their opinion like a guy who stands in front of the movie spoiling it for those first watching. I love Kant but he'd be better without this on his resume.

If German philosophers gets you hot, then Kant is your man. His observations are the standard for the followers of sublimity and respect the earlier writing of Longinus. If this is your first Kant encounter you'll want to follow it up with his Critiques of Pure, Practical and Metaphysic Morals and Ethics. Kant can explain your inter most feeling and unlike his later Tutons doesn't blame mommy.

AN EARLY WORK ON AESTHETICS BY THE PREEMINENT GERMAN PHILOSOPHER

Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was a German philosopher who is perhaps the founder of "modern" philosophy, with his focus on epistemology (theory of knowledge); he wrote many books, such as Critique of Pure Reason, Critique of Practical Reason, Critique of Judgement, Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics, Religion Within the Limits of Reason Alone, Lectures on Ethics, On History, etc.

Kant begins this 1764 book with the statement, “The various feelings of enjoyment or displeasure rest not so much upon the external things that arouse them as upon each person’s own disposition to be moved by these to pleasure or pain. This accounts for the joy of some people over things that cause aversion in others… or the lively antipathy one person feels toward something that is to another quite indifferent… I shall cast my gaze upon only a few places that seem particularly exceptional in this area… more with the eye of an observer than of a philosopher.” (Pg. 45)

He outlines, “Finer feeling… is chiefly of two kinds: the feeling of the SUBLIME and that of the BEAUTIFUL. The stirring of each is pleasant, but in different ways. The sight of a mountain whose snow-covered peak rises above the clouds… arouse enjoyment but with horror; on the other hand, the sight of flower-strewn meadows… occasion a pleasant sensation … that is joyous and smiling. In order that the former impression could occur to us in due strength, we must have feeling of the sublime, and in order to enjoy the latter well, a feeling of the beautiful. Tall oaks and lonely shadows in a sacred grove are sublime; flower beds, low hedges and trees trimmed in figures are beautiful. Night is sublime, day is beautiful… The sublime MOVES, the beautiful CHARMS.” (Pg. 46-47)

Later, he adds, “Tragedy is distinguished from comedy, according to my view, chiefly in that in the first the feeling for the sublime is stirred, and in the second, that for the beautiful.” (Pg. 52)

He suggests, “The fair sex has just as much understanding as the male, but it is a beautiful understanding, whereas ours should be a deep understanding, an expression that signifies identity with the sublime.” (Pg. 78) He continues by discussing “the difference of the impression that the form and features of the fair sex make on the masculine. This complete fascination is really overlaid upon the sex instinct. Nature pursues its great purpose, and all refinements that join together, though they may appear to stand as far from that as they will, are only trimmings and borrow their charm ultimately from that very source.” (Pg. 86) He adds, “In matrimonial life the united pair should… constitute a single moral person, which is animated and governed by the understanding of the man and the taste of the wife.” (Pg. 95)

[He also, in Section Four, makes some quite racist comments about black Africans.]

Clearly, this is not one of Kant’s “major works”; and his racist remarks cast a deep pall over the book. Nevertheless, it has some value for those studying the development of Kant’s thought.

As far as I know this book is written by the most creative bloggers who write about kids activities. I love that most of the activities don't require expensive craft materials, a lot of them are child led and helping kids to find the best in them. This is a must have resource for parents with kids. This book is full of fun, engaging

This book is full of fun, engaging, and unique activities from a large collaboration of kid bloggers. There are sections for general/anytime activities, holiday activities, early childhood education, life skills, and organization of play and learning areas for kids. I appreciate that each activity is clearly labeled by which ages it is appropriate for, whether baby, toddler, preschool, or kindergarten. This is an excellent book for parents of young kids (what a great gift idea!) or for preschool teachers looking for fresh, new ideas. I can't wait to try out these activities with my own kids!

Great resource to have for anyone with young kids - I am blown away by all of the great ideas for learning, playing, and engaging kids! Love that the pages have easy navigation on the sides to help find age appropriate activities. I am sure this book will grow with our family as it is such a comprehensive resource. This will definitely be my go-to baby shower gift for new moms. I think it offers great play ideas, but also is a wonderful way to inspire parents to engage with their children and have a hand-son part of the learning process.

choppy and poorly constructed

I read the two previous novels in this series and. although the first was decent, the second went downhill. Not sure why I stuck with the series (free on kindle unlimited?) but ugh. What a waste. Crap dialogue, plot holes galore and feels like it was written in a week on a cocktail napkin.

Do Not Miss This One

I have read the two previous books in this trilogy and found them to be page turners. I was looking forward to the third book but was also a bit sceptical. After all, how much more thrilling could it get? I was so engrossed in this book that I was literally unable to stop reading it. If my Kindle Fire ran out of juice I switched to my other Kindle to continue reading. I could not wait for the Fire to recharge. As a former English teacher and avid reader since the age of seven I encourage Victor Mathos to keep writing. I will keep buying and reading his books!

Not a good exit...

I have read the trilogy. Thoroughly enjoyed the first two books. This last book was, putting it mildly, AWFUL. The author did a great job in the first two books - hard to believe that the same person wrote this last one. I couldn't even finish it.

Excellent collection!

Amazing book, glad I got it for such a great price! I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Joans works, although I wish they would do a second version and put out some more of her charts. My only complaint is that the charts go almost right to the spine of the book, making a couple of the rows on each page very difficult to see.

About the Author
Michael Whitlock is Professor of Biology in the Department of Zoology at the University of British Columbia. He is an expert in population genetics, especially in the evolution of spatially structured populations. Dolph Schluter is Professor and Canada Research Chair and Director of the Biodiversity Research Center at the University of British Columbia. He is known for his work in evolutionary ecology, especially speciation in three-spined sticklebacks.

Absolutely wonderful textbook in every way

INTRO BIOSTATISTICS PROFESSORS: I implore you, MAKE THIS THE REQUIRED TEXTBOOK FOR YOUR CLASS. I was deeply unimpressed with my biostatistics professor this semester, but am sure that no matter how good a professor you are, this book can still make your class even better for your students. I found myself thinking that, even if I had gained next to nothing from the lectures, I had at least gotten a fantastic textbook out of the class.

This textbook is both wonderfully informative and - something that has been said by very few people not destined to graduate with a degree in biostatistics, I'd wager - actually enthralling. Over and over, I was excited to see what the results of the examples were, ended up doing unnecessary practice questions just to see what they found out. (The consistency with which every single data set and experiment mentioned in the book is interesting is boggling.)

And the book makes sense! The book is very well-written and well-worded, with highly understandable explanations (and a sense of humor to ease frustration). Additionally, the math is accessible and understandable, even for those (like myself) who remember nearly nothing of calculus and have very poor mathematical intuition. For those more interested in the mathematical underpinnings, however, the book doesn't shy away from the proofs and functions - even when it admits that, at this point, tests are going to be completely computerized anyway.

I came into statistics knowing nothing but a general feeling of unease and frustration. Thanks mostly to this textbook, statistics seems actively *exciting* to me, and makes a lot of sense. I highly recommend it, for all levels of interest and skill.

Statistics Made Relevant and Easy

My initial thoughts before signing up for a required statistics college course were that this subject would be very math intensive, difficult to understand, and one that I would soon forget after the course. This book, however, made the subject of statistics very straightforward for a science major like me. While the math is fairly intense, I was surprised at the way the concepts behind the math were presented and how statistics was tied to the broader focus of effective experimental design. We used this book along with SPSS(statisical software) and I can say that I'm confident enough now to perform basic studies on my own. While I certainly will not remember the specific equations behind the various statisical tests, I certainly will remember the constitution of effective experimental design and the various assumption and pitfalls of statistical tests. The book itself is very readable, and includes specific examples from contemporary biological studies. The authors also have a good sense of humor. This book is essential for a science-major oriented statistical course. The book effectively accomplishes the objectives in the preface
Interesting Biology Examples, Intuitive explanation of key concepts, practical data analysis and experimental design, up to date basics, modern topics, and useful summaries/charts of concepts.
I'm amazed at how one can use an introductory book like this as a reference to point out flaws in highly academic, experimental studies in the scientific mainstream today.
