Though not nearly as well known as Ford or Edison, Frederick Winslow Taylor's influence on the modern age is no less significant; management guru Peter Drucker calls Taylor "the most powerful as well as the most lasting contribution America has made to Western thought since the Federalist Papers." Although Taylor's name may have been forgotten by the masses, the management practices he implemented have become the worldwide standard for efficiency. Taylor invented what became known as "Scientific Management," or simply "Taylorism," an approach to organizing factories and offices that placed workers within a rigid system designed for maximum productivity. Frederick Taylor is well known as the "father of scientific management," yet an explanation of scientific management usually appears as just a sidebar in modern management textbooks, and "Taylorism" has become a synonym for oppressively monotonous working conditions. Taylor's principles, however, revolutionized modern industry and are still in evidence, for good or bad, in factories throughout the world. It can also be argued that automation is simply an extension of Taylor's ideas. Though references abound to Taylor, no recent biographical portrait of this influential figure exists. Frank B. Copley's dryly meticulous two-volume 1923 work was reprinted in 1969, and Sudhir Kakar provided a speculative psychoanalytic profile in 1970. Now Kanigel, who wrote Apprentice to Genius: The Making of a Scientific Dynasty (1986) and a 1991 biography of the mathematician Ramanujan, fills the void with this colorful, readable account of Taylor's fascinating life and his far-reaching influence. Worth a lot more than .01

Purchased this used for .01 because I'm very much into management practices. Today we have started self-directed work teams. This book outlines a complete opposite practice of a hierarchical command structure. As I was reading this thorough and interesting book, I was reminded of how labor unions came about and how work was such a chore for the common laborer. Thank goodness we have come a long way from these horrible work practices.

For anyone with an interest in the history of management theory, the early twentieth century, or what life was like without the extreme material abundance that marks our civilization (and how we came to be that way), this book is phenomenal. Kanigel deserves special praise for his even-handed treatment of the subject and of the many controversies that surround it. I got the sense that, through writing this book, he came to really appreciate Taylor and fully understand his critics.
I especially appreciated that he refrained from drawing conclusions about how to reconcile Taylor's ideas with later movements or from reinterpreting him through modern eyes. Instead, he leaves this all-important work to the reader.
Overall, the book is extremely well done. I highly recommend it.
