About the Author

Fantastic book!

What a fantastic book! Just a great read in the most accessible style but providing genuine information that's hard to find elsewhere. Ms. Johnsen connects the dots! Academic specialists, being what they are, tend to look at topics with blinders on - they can't connect different cultures (even when the cultures were clearly in contact with each other) and they once they've got the idea that somebody like Thales or Plato is a scientist or a philosopher, they ignore any spiritual side the writer might have had - even when that was their main mission in life. Linda Johnsen does an outstanding job of bringing it all together as regards some of the main thinkers of Greek and Hellenistic antiquity, and she does so with a style that makes the book hard to lay down. Anyone interested in the Greek philosophical tradition, in spirituality, in cultural interconnection between Europe and points east should check out this endearing book!

In the America of our founding fathers, Hamilton, Jefferson, Madison, and Washington, a classical education was the gateway to all of the professions. With the rise of scientific materialism and industrialism, the classical education began to be eclipsed by a more pragmatic, utilitarian training which resulted in our losing touch with the spiritual roots of our own civilization. It is high time that we return to this essential training and assure ourselves and our young people that we are conversant with the thought and spiritual practices of our own Western indigenous wisdom tradition. Wow, she highlights people that were not in my background studies as mystical thinkers and makes some observations about their personalities and experiences that shed light on the broader picture. I find it repeatedly amazing how supposed learned people can hone in on an idea and reject the context, then pass that on to the descending generations until it's context is very lost. It changes things. Moral lesson for me which I have been doing more in recent years, anyway is: "Don't be lazy; go to the original sources and learn if first hand for yourself." I plan to some of this after reading this book.
